Last time I checked, Reason or FL Studio are the more popular programs. I'm unsure if there are any other alternatives that have sprung up since I made audio.

In my opinion, Audacity.
It has some pretty good features and isn't that hard to make some good stuff.

Another one would be Acoustica Mixcraft. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty good.

Well, that's something personal since different people have different opinions, there are several great programs out there.
Here you can find a list of audio studios and editors, and here you can find a list of software synthesizers.

Are there any that are free to download and it's not a demo? Because for some time I've wanted to make music to put in the audio portal.

Look at the links I posted right before your post. Those lists include the price of the programs, and you can also find some that are free ;)
