What can I do to make sure my file sizes don't boom, and yet have things look as good as they do in all their pixelated goodness? Any tips at all?

Import the file to the library and place it on the stage. Then trace the bitmap, after that remove the file. This should use minimal space.

There is an extention in flash that lets you draw pixely. I forgot where I got it though. Sorry.

even the imported file won't increase the filesize... you should be able to have tons of pictures in your flash without thinking about the size.
