peta_wants_test_tube_meat/
Peta strikes again, offering a mere one million dollars to someone who can come up with a financially competitive industrial process to produce in vitro chicken meat.
Of course, this issue has once more divided PETA into two camps: People who don't understand their own moral opposition to meat-eating, and people who want to make a big show of supporting the fight against animal cruelty without actually making a serious commitment.
Just so we're on the same page here, one million dollars is a laughable amount for this sort of project. It would cost many times that just for the theoretical developments behind the process, much less the actual reactor design, scale-up, construction and operation. Chemical plants are expensive. Bioreactors even more so. A plant that farms large, cohesive chunks of usable biomass? I'm pretty sure those don't even exist yet.
I'm really just sick of hearing about PETA. They don't know what they're doing, and they don't know what anybody else is doing. They just like to scream and shout about things to remind people that they still exist.
Thoughts?

You got it right there. They probably think they are being generous, and Im sure theyll use it in 'we are good we seek alternatives blah blah blah' kindof way.

My thoughts: PETA is a fucked up organization with fucked up people in it. They do really stupid and loony shit like making a joke about the Holocaust and comparing slavery and the cruelty of slaves in America long ago to the sufferings of a bunch of fucking cows. The worst part about them though is that they are a bunch of hypocrites, since they have killed many animals themselves. THEY SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
Thank you.

PETA has proven over and over again it's social activism for dummies and bored celebrities (who are probably also dummies). Like you say, just screaming and shouting to feel important and like your standing up for something without the intelligence to really do so.

I just find it aggravating that the leader of a popular activist organization could offer up such a tiny amount for such an enormous undertaking, then describe it as "a lot of money," especially since the deadline for it is in 2012.
It seems to me like they're going to wait for the technology to develop on its own (since there's already research in this field and there has been for years now), then claim credit for "supporting" it, when in reality they did nothing.

Wouldn't such a discovery be worth exponentially more anyway?

I wonder how far that $1,000,000 would go to funding no-kill animal shelters?
So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we had the key...

I wonder how many humans can be stuffed in concentration camps for one million dollars?
Or did I get off topic?
But seriously, who the fuck are they fooling with this? What next, forcing high class restaraunts to serve human placenta as meat, because it's "cruelty free" ? I bet next they'll put forth "A Modest Proposal" a la Jonathan Swift.
I think they do this shit as an attempt to straw man meat eaters as some sort of freaks because they use their teeth for what they're designed for. "If you'll eat factory raised chicken, you're a sick mother fucker! You'd probably eat test tube meat too! Here's a million $ for R&D you sick fuckers! MEAT IS MURDER RAH RAH RAH!!!! PUT BREAST MILK IN BEN AND JERRY'S ICECREAM!!! RAH RAH RAH!!! I SECRETLY WISH I WAS A CHEERLLEADER!!! RAH RAH RAH!!!
PETA makes me hate white people.
My band Sin City ScoundrelsOur song Vixen of Doom
HATE.
Because 2,000 years of "For God so loved the world" doesn't trump 1.2 million years of "Survival of the Fittest."

Now, I don't know the details of this, but I rather thought the point was that anyone who can come up with a way to get people to eat meat that hasn't been produced by killing animals would be kind of a hero in the eyes of PETA.
But yes, the amount of money is too small for any serious company to consider it. Too bad.
You shouldn't believe that you have the right of free thinking, it's a threat to our democracy.
