I was ambidextrous when I was little, but now I'm left handed for most things.
Actually, besides the obvious (genetics) nobody really knows exactly WHY it is that human beings, or any other creature for that matter, would develop a preference for one hand over the other. I mean, there's certainly no evolutionary advantage to favoring one side over the other.
Can YOU explain why people are right-handed or left-handed? Don't even bother, because you cannot. I know right now that you'll be answering the question of HOW people are right-handed or left-handed instead of WHY.

Soooo, why do people prefer their right to their left?
Perhaps she was asking why, genetically, some people are more predisposed to using their right hand over their left? Or is not a genetic predisposition at all, and we grow up simply favoring one hand over the other? If it is genetic, what biological function does being left-handed vs. right-handed serve?

Me too, when I was younger though but now I've gotten a hang on just doing stuff with my left. Then, when I broke my left hand I had to do things with my right but after it the left held I was still using my right because I got so used to it. And now I am a left hander again.

Well, explaining how is easy enough. Its the first thumb we suck in the womb. But as to why, there really isnt a why, because we can train our non-dominant hand to function just as well as our birth dominant hand.

If you are reading this, it means I have posted. Whether or not I am still posting, this has left its mark, for many years to come.
I remember that someone told me that people develop a favor of one hand over the other because of how they were given things to hold as a child or how they held things as a child out of comfort.
Now, I never saw myself as a child, nor can I remember with what hand I held things, but I'm left-handed, so that must have been my favored hand. But, at the same time, conditioning can effect how you use your hands. My grandfather, for example, was naturally left-handed, but that was considered odd in his school, so the teachers would slap his hand if he tried to do things with his left hand. Because of this, he became right-handed out of sheer fear of punishment.
