With all the talk of new games, I figured I'd bring back something oldschool.... 2D shooters.
Games like R-Type and Gradius come to mind for me. But what are you favorite shooter games and why? I mean, what it is it about the genra/game that makes them so damn fun? The story? The weapons?
For me, it's the weapons. Even in games like Smash TV and Zombies Ate my Neighbors (those do count as 2D shooters right?) the fun was getting a dope weapon and annhilating everybody on the screen. The bubble gun, the football, the weedeater... the gernades and of course, everybodies favorite... the spread.
So what are your thoughts on the genra?

I love 2D shooters, I grew up playing R-Type and Contra. If someone would make a new 2D shooter with enhanced graphics and all I'd probably buy it.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

I figure there's two main category of 2D shooters, scrolling shooters (usually with a plane or space ship, like R-Type and Gradius) and platform shooters like Contra, Metal Slug, or even maybe Megaman.
The platform shooters have kind of come back with Megaman going old school, Metal Slug getting released as a collection and Contra getting a DS release. You don't find quite so much love for the scrolling 2D shooters though. It's a shame because they're quite a bit of fun and usually quite exhilirating because they tend to be very fast and furious type games.

If Contra 3 got rid of the rubbish top down levels, and only had the fantastic sidescrolling ones, it'd probably be the best game ever.

Try Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis, it was THE SHIT, not only it is one of the best games of the genesis in my opinion, but it also had several weapons based around powerups that you can mix to make another gun.
Example:
Machinegun + guided laser beam = guided machinegun,
Machinegun + flames = explosive machinegun bullet.
Seriously this game is the shit and it features one of the best bosses ever, Seven Force.

You'd be stupid not to buy it.
Super Stardust HD is probably as close as you can get at the minute.

Yeah, I remember this one game for the Dreamcast, Bangai-O. It's a shooter where you control a Mecha and there are crazy power-ups. The game looks like it came straight out of an arcade.
