Australia is being a real bitch about this.
If you want to stop your kids from coming across porn, you can employ LOCAL filters. You don't need the damn government to tell you what to do.

Perhaps, but they stated that there are going to be 2 blacklists. One for everyone, and one with additional blocking for parents that want to feel extra safe! Something tells me that the "protect teh children" line is just the excuse to push through chinese style laws.
Maybe Australia is competing with the UK to see which democracy can be the most authoritarian and oppressive?

Well put! Although if they are competing with England they have a very long way to go.
Some websites are pretty bad, such as the ones with ways to make bombs, but censoring them isn't going to stop someone who is really determined. As far as porn goes, you can get things for your computer which will disallow access to adult sites without the appropriate password. I don't know what kind if any information freedom laws Australia has, but if they are anything like the U.S. this could be illegal.

Seconded. It's also not that hard to actually monitor what a kid does. It makes no sense to infringe on the freedom of an entire country just to keep a few whiny parents who are too lazy to actually take care of their kid themselves from making a fuss. If someone doesn't want their kid to see something the best solution is to not let the kid see it (local filters, monitored internet time, etc.) NOT to go batshit crazy all over the internet of your fucking country.

Step 1. Locate proxy server
Step 2. Use proxy server to acccess "illegal" material.
Step 3. Laugh at government's stupidity.
Step 4. Be made an example out of when you're tossed in the clink for getting around the firewall.
Step 5. Profit.
I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

My folks know I'm smart enough to know the difference between bullshit and a load of bullshit.
Forums should be the least of their worries. Some porno sites out there are just fucked up..maybe that's why the Aussies censored them...too damn disgusting =P

That's irrelevant. The only reason my parents don't monitor me is because they trust that I'm not on porn websites or terrorist sites or whatever, because they know I'm a responsible and intelligent enough person not to do those sorts of things. If parents don't want to control their kids because they actually trust them, then that's fine. But nonetheless the burden should be on parents to actually be responsible for what their kid is or is not using the internet for, that should be where it ends. The government doesn't need to have some fascist totalitarian thought-police internet crackdown just because parents are too lazy to monitor their kids. If people don't monitor their kids, that's fine, but then I think they should lose the right to complain about such things. The government shouldn't be doing something as drastic and immoral as mandatory censorship because whiny parents don't want to watch their kids.

How is the UK goverment oppressive and authoritarian? :S
That's just wrong. Makes me proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free to access anything I want on the internet.
I think any government censorship is ridiculous. Once you start censoring things, it becomes far too easy to go to far.
Parents are just too fucking lazy to talk to there children about being safe on the internet. I don't know whats up with the Aussies. Their mostly descended from prisoners (Australia used to be a British prison colony) m and are typically cool, fun, and badass. But they banned guns and now this?
All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

Just get your resident computer programmer nerd to hack it for you.
Or simpler yet, use a proxy.
I remember reading the victorian government was testing a state-wide filter for our schools, and they one of the testers, a 13 year-old Asian kid, hacked it in 10 minutes.
