I was the first person in town to get it and probably the only NGer to have it thus far so I'll review it for you.
Okay. I only just played it and let me tell you now, it's an entirely new sound for The Cure, but it's still The Cure. It's a lot more edgy in it's approach than other albums have been.
The reintroduction of Porl has changed the whole sound with it being a fairly guitar orientated album compared to most others, with an exhibition of great alternative/rock guitar up there with the best.
And Justin Cooper, who I must admit I was never that keen on, is drumming well (almost as good as Boris Williams did). With of course Gallop holding down the bottom end as well as he ever has, and Smith is being classic Smith.
Of course though it's still that same melancholic sound which Cure fans have grown to love over 30 years, but the BPM of the songs has been upped giving it a more pure rock feel.
Okay a few of the songs on it won't go down as "classic" Cure tracks though and and are a bit weak, and it doesn't seem to have many of the slow heart wrenchers that Smith has built his reputation on, but nothing really overly detracting as the writing is still top notch. And it is bringing in what I think is a whole new era for the gang, and I hope they continue with it.
In conclusion it's a FANTASTIC effort!! I mean I was expecting a good album even after hearing a few disparaging comments, but this is even better than I was expecting... They have atoned for their self-titled sins.
4.5/5
