Everyone has an account on YouTube, whether you want to jerk off to jailbait dancing to shitty rap music, make fun of video bloggers, or maybe even, you know, upload some shit yourself. But have you noticed they are turning into quite the fucking Nazis lately? Take for example, this evening. I was checking my email when what do I see?
"YouTube - A copyright owner has claimed content in one of your videos"
Wait...wut.
First of all, I've only uploaded one video EVER, and secondly, that was a full TWO FUCKING YEARS AGO (July 31, 2006, 11:04 PM to be quite exact) so what's this all about.
I then read on.
"Dear MidnyteRayne,
Video Disabled
A copyright owner has claimed it owns some or all of the audio content in your video Chasing Amy - Pink Triangle. The audio content identified in your video is Pink Triangle by Weezer. We regret to inform you that your video has been blocked from playback due to a music rights issue."
.....the fuck.
So apparently, after ages of sitting in obscurity with 13,183 views and a 5-star rating, videos that contain copyrighted music (for those of you keeping count, thats just about every fucking video on YouTube) are breaking some imaginary law in Jack-off Land. Now look closer.
"A copyright owner has claimed it owns some or all of the audio content in your video"
Now of course this could just be some fancy fluff to make YouTube look like they have some divine authority, but otherwise it's ridiculous. This statement says to the viewer that some bigwig motherfucker is cracking down on third-party content containing music from "Band X." In reality though, we know it's some un-shaven, un-washed asshat in his underwear searching YouTube for <insert band here> and going "HURRRRR REPORT" on every last result. And it works.
But better yet, when trying to resolve the issue, look at the little glimmer of hope they try and pass off to you:
"If you believe that this claim was made in error, or that you are otherwise authorized to use the content at issue, you can dispute this claim with the alleged copyright owner. You will be guided through a web-based form, and your dispute will be passed to them for review."
A web-based form. Sure, that certainly sounds like it's going to get the utmost attention by a bunch of assholes who could care less about anything besides wiping their ass with 100s. This is a load of hokey bullshit and I can smell the lies like a fart in a car. What in the fuck do they have to gain from censoring copyrighted content on a website like YouTube of all sorts. I honestly doubt that viewing my video 13,000 some odd times is going to detract from their record sales; if anything, my video might have gotten a couple assholes to go out and BUY the record ffs.
So yeah, I more or less forgot I even had anything on my account until today, but if this is how we can expect things will come to pass, the internet is more or less fucked. If they're going to remove shit like this, then they better destroy every last fucking Linkin Park/Naruto AMV with the all-cleansing light of FUCKING GOD as well.
P.S. Oh, and if more bands are going to front being "only about the music" and then turn around and pull a Metallica-esque bitchfest when their check clears at the end of the month, I'm going to pirate the SHIT out of their music.
