French I'd like to congratulate you by getting Tom to notice you. He even posted your thread in the new news post. Nice.

just shuts down.

I'm not too fancy with the computers but you should probably re-download the newest flash. That or there's somthing up with the processor. Or maybe it's your internet browser

Hi guys!

I recently spoke with a guy who builds custom PCs out of used parts. Normally he only carries Core 2 Duos and a huge backstock of ancient computers (I bought a clone of my old 486 for 5$, since I couldn't pass up the nostalgia value).

I've been looking to bump up to a gaming rig - nothing super-mega-ultra sharp, just something that will run my games relatively reliably. I don't play online and I don't really care about graphics quality, just so long as its a bit above minimum.

He's offered to build me a PC with these parts, custom job, for 699$ Canadian. The specs are:

- 500 gig harddrive
- 4 gigs of DDR2 Ram (which he will bump up to 8 gigs for an additional 65$)
- Asus PSQ Motherboard
- NVidia Gforce Nx8400 GS
- Creative Soundblaster Sound card
- Case of my choice from the store

Is this a good deal, or do you know if I could either find a better custom job, or the parts to do it myself (I've learned pretty much how to assemble a computer)/

An 8400GS is no gaming card, I have doubts it would even handle HD playback. Ask him how much it would be to get a 9600GT instead. If he says anymore than 130CAD, pick up your own. Also, you won't see that much improvement in 8gigs over 4.

And yeah, the 9800gt will play most games fine.

You're such a dick recently, seriously. As if it makes any significant note worthy differences or for the matter of fact that he just wants to play a few games on low/med.

Considering that a 9800GT has 112 stream processors and it's core and memory clocks set to 600/1800; the 9800GTX has 16 more stream processors and clock speeds bumped up about 75~400 more MHz while being priced only 5$ more on Newegg. Small difference but it could pay off.

I wasn't even aware the difference in price was that close. Actually, if you want to save yourself even more money, buy yourself the 250 rebrand; they seem to be cheaper.

Okay, making my first PC, and I'm pretty clueless so I just had someone spec it for me, and wanted to check if this stuff will work together and if it's any good.

Motherboard
Harddrive
Graphics card
Processor
Fan
RAM
PSU
DVD Drive
Case
Monitor

To be used for gaming, and monitor to double as TV for use with PS3 and 360.

Took a screenshot of the basket on the site rather than typing everything out if you don't want to have to follow links.

Help plz.

Quite pricy, and at any rate, your chosen model's cheaper here anyway.

But for example, this is a HD 23" monitor for £100 less.

Why yes, all the parts you mentioned will work together and the 4870 is really good bang for buck. It'll be a nice gaming / multimedia PC. Make sure you read enough manuals / view enough videos or ask friends to help when building your PC. You can easily wreck a CPU if not placed right.

Yeah, I'm not going to even open stuff until I'm confident I know what to do with it. I'm dead paranoid about stuff like this.

That's a different one and lacks the HDMI, which was the reason I chose that one. I'll pay the extra cash just to have that.

That would be quite ironic for this crew wouldn't it? A construction crew that buys premade PCs.
Though I must say that some of their PCs are somewhat price competitive, but it's always cheaper to make your own PC of course.

As far as I know, the 360 and ps3 only upscale in a 16:9 monitor ratio. 1920x1200 is a 16:10 ratio, you might have trouble getting them to display on that screen.

Why would you pay (english symbol)100 more for just HDMI capability? It's just video and audio on one cord. It's nothing fantastic. Just get something cheaper with a DVI cable.

Also, may I suggest getting a full tower case?

And perhaps a better PSU if you plan to upgrade to crossfire in the future.

I got an awesome non-branded black (They were selling a variety of combos) HDMI/DVI-D cable with gold-plated connectors for 19.99$ at my local computer store. PS3 plays awesome on it and it's like 18'. Don't buy the rubbish pitch lines that cable vendors as Monster try to use to lure customers in.

They mainly mention only factors that should be considered when requiring a long connection solution in the 50~100 ft range (Ex. Signal decay (Does not effect the image quality due to it being digital, not analog)).

Also, may I suggest getting a full tower case?

It's good to have a full tower no matter what the future holds for it.

So, how paranoid about static do I need to be when building this? Touching the case occasionally enough, or do I need to go get one of then wrist straps?

Also, better place to build it: wooden table standing on carpet, kitchen bench (not sure what it's made of, not wood) standing on stone tiles, or on the floor on the tiles themselves?

Just ground yourself every few minutes to the metal chassis of the case. Wearing those specially made gloves or grounding wires is rubbish and makes people look like tools. Been doing this for over five years now and have never fried anything.

Also, better place to build it: wooden table standing on carpet, kitchen bench, etc

Preferably tile or anything that is solid and not fuzzy like a carpet, though it won't make difference anyways.

BTW if you want to recommend me parts, then I will mostly be using the computer for Flash, Programming (HTML, PHP, C++ Etc.), Internet, Music. I also want quite abit of memory and RAM.

Hey, I have an 8-year old Gateway. 8 years is a long time, do you think there's any usable parts on it?

I'm going to build my own computer for the first time, I'm not trying to build a super computer but I want it to run very fast and have a lot of free memory. I'm not to concerned about graphics since it's not going to be a gaming computer. I'm planning on having dual-boot Xubuntu Linux and Windows 7 (or XP if I can find the CD). Xubuntu is just a lighter weight version of Ubuntu.

Can you give me any advice about hardware, drivers, etc? Trying to keep the cost low.

The following sentence is true. The previous sentence is false. O_o PARADOX!

For a thousand pounds you can buy yourself a game computer. Not sure if you want to spend your entire budget though. There are loads and loads of combinations for making computers. Since a lot of the guides are outdated, I'll give you a quick summary:

Memory or RAM: Memory and RAM are the same things. The more you have of it, the more programs you can run at the same time. Usually also decreases loading times.
Processor: Where everything in your PC happens, the speed of a processor is measured in Hertz (Hz), MegaHertz (Mhz) or GigaHertz (Ghz). The higher that number, the faster the processor is. Now a days a lot of computers have dual or quad cores. The more cores you have the faster you can multitask.
Motherboard: The circuit board where all your components go on. Make sure all your computer parts are compatible with the motherboard. If you're not sure, ask here.
Graphics card: Simply put, this determines how fast your games will run. Check out some reviews of cards if you think you've found a good one and check how well it performs in various games.
Power supply: Be sure that your PSU has enough Amps and Watt to power your system. If you have a beefy graphics card, you'll also need a beefy PSU.
