I am going to vote for Barack Obama, and I will tell you why. Try and disagree with me, I dare you.
A long while back, a movement started. Out of the horrors of ultracapitalism, the inequality, corruption, stratification, poverty and loss of rights associated with it, communists thought they had the answer. And so the USSR was created. Now you have two polar opposites in the world, absurd inequality on one end, and totalitarian equality on the other. People in the east and west picked a side. It seemed there were only two options to this, but there were not.
And the movement that started was Social Democracy. Emerging largely in Sweden by such leaders as Hjalmar Branting, Social Democracy was something different. They saw that Capitalism had strong successes, as well as horrific shortcomings. Capitalism resulted in soft racism, enormous inequality, poor education, political corruption, bloody wars of conquest and above all a belief that work is more important than life, that the economic top line high score was more important than the bottom line. Yet at the same time, Capitalisms meritocratic economic system allowed for entrepreneurship, product competition, technological progress as well as the fact that it also fit well with human nature, albeit to a far too extreme degree. Likewise, Communism was ahead of it's time in practicing gender and racial equality, alleviation of poverty, self-determinism of the worlds poor and downtrodden.
Yet communism was also fatally flawed. The real world execution resulted in totalitarianism, corruption, barbarism, technological stagnation and a stifling of human drive and competition. It was these pros and cons of both systems that intrigued social democrats, they thought to themselves "why cant we create a system that emphasizes the pros of both systems, yet tries to minimize the cons of both". This was the guiding principle behind social democracy, and the idea spread throughout Europe in varying degrees, and also found a home in a much watered down state in the USA, Canada and the Anglosphere. But what is Social Democracy? It's a mixed market economy that's main focus is that the economy does not stifle democracy in any way, that the economy supports a high living standard for everyone, that the economy is there to support the living standard, and is not idolized as an end-result. The political side emphasized that there should be no intolerance, no injustice, no discrimination and minimal corruption. There must be transparency in government, proper democratic representation. Secularism was also a major feature, the government should work to remove the medieval taint of religion from all aspects of government, as it is a root cause of prejudice, superstition and irrational censorship. And over the decades Sweden and it's neighbors moved, promoted by strong leaders such as Olof Palme to create a wonderful society.
And that's ultimately what happened. Now Scandinavia has the best healthcare system in the world. Everyone is treated, everyone is equal. The system is not molded around a subconcious desire to see healthcare denied to those who are not priviledged and white, it was a basic human right. Scandinavia has an equal or higher average income as the US, however minimum wage is greatly increased while the upper earnings were decreased. While capitalists decried this as being a violation of their right to hoard massive amounts of wealth, there was no loss to this. Even with a progressive tax scale, the wealthy were still very wealthy, yet not to an absurd extreme that it took money that is needed to help those at the bottom. And those at the bottom are compensated by a livable wage, one that provides enough to support a meritocratic system. There is still a desire for people to promote themselves and move upward, in fact the work ethic in this welfare state is often superior to that of capitalist countries. And unlike pure capitalist countries, when people fall, they dont fall too far, and they never fall into poverty. This way competition remains strong, but lacks the absurd inequality of of countries like the US. The economy of Europe as a whole has been steadily rising in fortune as investment and promise flows in. The Euro is top dog, the world looks to Europe as the crown of hope for the 21st century onward. As America begins to buckle under recession, unthinkable debt, a declining currency and a world that is moving to permanently punish America economically by de-synching and moving around us, our economy may tank but the rest of the world keeps trucking. If America continutes on it's destructive and negative treatment of the world, it will not only be guarenteed, but justified.
And so Scandinavia has one of the most tolerant, secular parts of the world, if not the most. Crime is minimal, corruption is listed as almost nonexistent. Gender equality is at it's highest, while discrimination is almost extinct. Poverty is extinct, a horrible nightmare that only exists overseas. The education system is the greatest in the world. Scandinavia features the fewest creationists in the world, and in international testing rankings they consistently come out on top. Virtually all school are equal in their immense quality, there is no caste between schools for privileged whites and impoverished blacks. Scandinavia boasts a top-class democracy of equal and full representation, broadly intelligent voting habits and multiple political parties. In foreign affairs, they are the most peaceful and positive nations in the world, while the US is almost entirely a negative force in the world. Scandinavia is almost universally considered the greatest place to live, consistently ranking in the top of every study. They lead on environmental advocacy and secular intellectualism. Their judicial system is superior, their punishment system is humane and modern. Their technology surpasses us easily. Any and all possible shortcomings are far worse in the US. The entire system is a win-win situation for every aspect of society, politics, and the rest of the world.
And so here is where Barack comes in.
I believe Barack may be our Hjalmar. He is nowhere near a Social Democray, barack is a solid conservative with a concious. Yet, in his term he could lay the idelogical groundwork for Americas overdue self-improvement. We are a nation of poverty, inequality, racism, sexism, homophobia, religious theocracy and repression, crime, shootings, human rights abuse and bloody warfare. We are what many countries sought to move away from in the late 19th to mid-20th century, but our baby steps turned to retard naps. It's tome to try to learn to walk, Barack may lay down the foundation not in his 8 years, but by moving the mainstream bottom line ever so slowly and irreversibly to the left, from it's current resting place in the extreme right wing. He may not directly change anything in his office, but he will be receptive, he will not antagonize progress, but rather inspire people that right wing extremism may not be the only option. Basic groundwork, like universal healthcare, anti-corruption measures and maybe one day even electoral reform are crucial in finally laying the necissary foundations towards our possible, and hopeful chance of becoming a modern nation. We arent yet, we may be in a 100 years. Barack is the only electable candidate who has even a chance of doing this. Will he? Who knows. Is he the only electable candidate who can? Yes. America has very little positive impact on the world, and in some ways only a small positive impact on it's own population. Time to change this, we've gone down the wrong road in the last few centuries, and every human on planet earth outside of conservative America knows this full well.

If there is something like a reverse Bradley effect, it could. Unless a series of major events take place in McCain's favor right before the election, the question won't be if Obama will win, but by how much.

I support his views on 'Going Green'. I don't agree with some of his other views, but the majority I agree.
