Well, I was wondering, if you don't animate fbf, how do you animate? Is it usually a mixture of tweening and fbf, or what? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I'm new to flash and I'm curious. I'm trying to learn myself some good animation techniques.

You could just insert a keyframe, and just erase and redraw the part that you want to move.
Other than that, it's fbf

I figured as much. It just seems like on the portal, when someone does something fbf, it's a big deal. I was wondering why.

fbf is NOT a big deal. Especially if you're talking about those fags that think fbf is nothing but flowing lines morphing into random/retarded things.

fbf is basically when you completely redraw something to show the movement. The only other way to really animate is to (say if you were animating a person) draw the arms, body, head, legs, hands, feet all into different grouped objects, and to tween this. This can look good, if you do it right, but you're pretty much letting the program animate it for you. Some people think tweening is cool and useful, but in my opinion, if you tween an entire flash, it is no longer an animation, but a fagimation. There was no work involved. Flash does it for you.

Anyways, that's really the only other way to animate.

No that is keyframing, idiot. FBF means you redraw every single frame.

You're a little harsh on tweening, there are a lot of good animations where the author has used tweens.. you still need to move everything, you just pick the start and stop points. FBF is generally a lot cooler, but that's obvious..

JohnnyUtah.

Watch Tankmen, and you'll know what else there is besides FBF.

Tankmen was actually one of the reasons I asked. I can tell it wasn't fully fbf, it's so smooth. But it doesn't look much like tweening, either. Was it? It just seems so clean and smooth.

It was mostly tweens. JohnnyUtah is really good at them and especially the usage of eases.

the true power of tweens are in the use of shape tween.

we can make super smooth 32 frames per second animations in minutes instead of hours thanks to shape tween.

Yet I tend more to use fbf, because it gives a more authentic effect.
