It's sort of like mushroom bark with a mushroom styrofoam center. Entirely unpleasant to eat raw, I'll agree. Last time I did them I blended up an eighth in a bunch of orange juice, which worked pretty well. Drinking brownish orange juice with chunks of mushroom pulp in it is pretty gross, but it was certainly better than chewing them up.
