Cop Saves Baby Who Stopped Breathing in Searing Heat

GREELEY, Colo. — Sgt. Rusty Mellon was around when 3-week-old Maximus Espinosa needed a cop.

The child's mother and grandmother were taking him to the doctor for a routine visit when he stopped breathing in the nearly triple-digit heat.

Regina Weglin and her daughter, Gina Espinoza, were franctic, trying to decide whether to continue to the doctor's office or go to the emergency room.

Then they saw Mellon's police car. They began honking their horn and flashing the car's lights.

Mellon thought it was just another heat-crazed driver and he got out of his car ready to yell at the driver for weaving through parking lanes.

Instead, Weglin leaped from her car, shoved the blue-faced baby into Mellon's hands and shouted: "He's stopped breathing."

"I kind of threw the baby to him; I was so shook up," Weglin said. Mellon returned to his car with the infant, laid him on the seat, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

At the same time, he told the mother and grandmother to get inside a nearby tire store, out of the heat, and he radioed for emergency services.

"It didn't take much to revive the baby," Mellon said. "A couple of breaths, and he started breathing again."

Weglin said, "We don't know why he stopped breathing. Maybe it was the heat." The temperature was 98 degrees when the child stopped breathing Saturday afternoon.

Weglin said she did every thing she could think of to get Mellon's attention, honking her horn and flashing her lights at the police car. "If I had to, I would have rammed his car."

Mellon, a 32-year veteran of the Greeley Police Department, has three grandchildren, ages 1, 2 and 4. While he has given CPR to adults, it was the first time he's revived an infant.
