I'm not very good at animation and I don't want whatever I do to be some piece of shit. I really want it to mean something to me; I want it to be important. I just don't know what to do.
Does anyone have any tips? I don't know, maybe just some general tips on how animation works... maybe I'm just missing some fundamentals or something. I really don't know.

Well, first, how long are you spending on each frame? To get things correct, you need to draw, CTRL+Z, draw, CTRL+Z...
Are you using too many gradients/tweens? Over-using noobish factors like these murder your flash.
Are you setting yourself goals that you can't achieve? If you think you can't achieve what you aimed for today, don't slap yourself on the face and start again tomorrow, just aim lower tomorrow and work on what you've got.
Are you 110% sure about what you want? If you just improvise, you'll get nowhere.
You might find this helpful too.
Hope I helped.
