I'm going to get a job in a couple of months, and with the money that I'll make, I was going to either build or buy a computer. I want a computer that is fast enough that it can go browse the web easily and fast, as well as run multiple windows of image editing programs, and be able to manipulate several images. And it just has to be fast overall. I also need a large hard drive to store tons of photographs.
So, would it be more expensive to buy this PC or build it to my needs?

That's a very simple set-up, and you'd have a much easier time building one either by yourself or with the help of a friend who is tech savvy. Best Buy or other retail stores will probably overcharge you, and stuff in a whole bunch of crap software you don't need. Considering the things you want won't need a super powerful computer, have you considered a laptop? They're a lot more powerful processor-wise now than even just a couple years ago.

build it that way you can put exactly what you want and need in it instead of buying one that's bogged down with crap you'll never use.

How old is your laptop? Time for an upgrade perhaps?
It sounds like you dont need much. Look up how to build a computer, its fairly simple. It would cost 500, 700 tops for what you're asking...not including photoshop (+600$)

Its easier to just build your own pc. thats exactly what I did and it cost me about half the price doing it myself instead of going to best buy or staples or somewhere and buying a computer with the similar performance parts i put in. Plus you dont get overloaded with factory-installed software

It's cheaper to build your own, and most of the time, you'll get better hardware, also. =) I recommend Newegg for parts.

Some people don't have the skills, they don't have the patiants and they dont even have the basic understanding about how a computer runs. If you think that magical elves make the pretty lights and sounds of your technological devices than you should probably buy it. But if you can build a computer. Than it is cheaper to do so, and you can get it exactly the way you want it.
So build it if you can.

So when I build this fancy computer I have to install and operating system, right?
And that brings me to.... XP or Vista?

Of course, in this case, the Porsche would actually be a better car, whereas an AlienWare computer is the same old shit with an enormous price hike. Build the computer yourself. The experience you get from it is valuable, and the deal you can create for yourself is absolutely unrivaled by any other options (Unless it's a laptop).
