You can specify a month preference, I suppose. Newground 'holidays' and events (Pico day/April, Clock Day/Aug., etc.) will take precedence over religious, cultural or seasonal happenings (as it should be :P). Not everyone celebrates Christmas, and winter in one hemisphere is summer in the other. So... the more newgroundified your piece is, the more likely it will get chosen.

300 dots (or pixels) per inch. It's a way of measuring resolution. When you start your artwork, change the resolution to 300dpi.
Yup, if you are using Photoshop or similar (raster) app, it needs to be 300dpi (see below). If you're doing it in something like Flash or Illustrator (vector), then you don't need to worry about it.
ANY style is acceptable! Be creative! :D
