where to get magnesium?

so, i made some thermite the other night, and tried to light it with an mps torch. the force of the gas just blew it everywhere. so to ignite my thermite, i will need either: a-a magnesium ribbom/strip, or b-a sparkler. since it is nowhere nere fireworks season, sparklers will be hard to get my hands on. also, to anyone interested, get your hands on some powdered iron oxide and powdered aluminum(both made at home it this case), mix well, and put it on something you won't miss(since a can full of this can melt through an inch of steel), put in the wick(sparkler/magnesium strip), and stand well back. make sure to wear eye protection(as the fire will be extremely bright and let off UV), as well as having a fire extinguisher handy in case the sparks hit something flamable(which is why you do this outside, away from your house)

to the mods: thermite and magnesium are legal for civilian use and ownership, so no locking, ok?

i know all the safety precautions, and i had the thermite set up on a solid concrete block on top of an outdoor concrete floor. and i forgot to mention, i would just buy the shit off ebay for $10 per 75 feet, but i doubt it would get past customs.

You can easily buy sparklers online. You could probably even find magnesium somewhere.

i decided to put it in there, since, you know, it's against the rules to discuss illegal activities and one would expect something as dangerous as thermite to be illegal for unliscensed used/possesion. and to be honest, i'm amazed there aren't strict laws governing it's use.

Not to smart, but in chemistry we did use magnesium in some experiments. I'm sure you could ask a teacher for some if you say its for a project.

actually, i got the idea from youtube. and it's only stupid if you don't do the research on safety precautions(although i think trying to light it with an mps torch was kinda stupid).

it is. it's mainly used for welding railway tracks. you probably are thinking it's illegal because it's used by the military for sabotage.
