You know what's funny? Most people who don't like rap music have only listened to the DK rap or the Pokemon rap, and those two things prove that not all rap music degrades women and promotes doing drugs. In fact that's mostly screamoh or hardcore metal that promotes doing drugs.

This song's second half is based on a true story that the rapper's father told him, about the Vietnam War.
He was a man that almost lost his soul in the violence, and became a merciless killer as a Special Forces guy.
He almost dies, and tries to become a different man when he returns to the US, but two of his kids are born disabled from the effects of Agent Orange, and one of his sons (The rapper's kid brother) dies.

Those are stupid reasons to hate a genre of music. Just like any other genre, there's the bad, and there's the good. I tend to just dislike the sound that rap has, not the themes, because most of the good intelligent rap has good intelligent lyrics...

Hm, you've obviously never tried then. I'll bet that you didn't even know that most, if not all of the sounds that the producer is using are not automatically 'there'. You have to tweak, edit, add effects, and then you have to do the hardest part; write it. And the rappers have to rap in time. It's actually pretty fucking hard to be able to have the write voice for rapping (if you don't it just sounds lame) and to be able to rap without slurring your words.

OK, these last three are pretty stupid. For someone who wants to have an intelligent conversation about a genre, you sure are clueless. Lyrics are usually about 3 things; having a good time, being in love/breaking up, or they just don't make any sense. If I had some time to look up some names of songs since I'm terrible with song names, I could easily find a song in every genre of music that has vocals in it that sings about the same stuff that rap does. You think that the lyrics "mean nothing to anyone about anything" because you don't like the style that the lyrics are used. Stop being a closed minded little kid, and actually think about the music and compare it to other forms of music. Rap isn't that bad, it's just different.

Seriously, I could make a thread about how rock sucks with over generalizations.

Look at all this rap vs. rock conflict.

There are good sides and bad sides to both, and you are going to typically find all of your stereotypical rap and metal on the radio. You're going to have to look harder for the incredible rap and metal artists, rather than just shut em both down because of a generalization.

I don't like rap but at least I'm not close minded about it.

I've heard rap that's just talking ove r aten second loop. it doesn't sound good. I've heard stuff that's well composed, and the rapper puts effort in rapping in melody. It takes talent, believe me. Also, it takes talent to come up with original stuff.

Well, what's wrong with sex (also, there's a song by Dead Prez called "Mind Sex" that emphasises that sex shouldn't be just the physical act, but more than that. So there goes your broad brush)

Anyway, as said, OP is overgeneralising. Hip-Hop has a lot of sub-genres, but unlike with metla or punk, most people don't really pay attention to them, and it's mostly DJ's and Producers who know the names.

The type complained in the thread would be Mainstream Gangsta, and recently, Dirty South (and its subgenres, mostly, Snap). I'm more into G-Funk, old school West Coast, Bay Area, and the rather broad and vague Backpacker genre.
