It's based on simple mathematical formula. Nothing supernatural. The symbols are placed in a pattern which makes it seem as if the answer is being randomly "predicted." There are several other versions of this game:

This is a very old gag and it is simple to reproduce. Your answer will always be a multiple of 9 so your final number will be 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 81. All the "magician" has to do is make all of those numbers have the same symbol and then pull that symbol later. Tada, you are "magic."

You can actually find your final number by taking the tens digit and multiplying it by nine. So for example any number in the 20's will end up at 18 (2 * 9).

first, go to the chart with all the numbers and symbols on it. now take any 2-digit number you can think of. lets say 10. 1+0=1, and 10-1=9. make a note of that symbol. also notice that if you did the same thing for the numbers 10-19, the final number comes out to be 9.
now, if you haven't figured it out by now, here's the magic. lets take the number 20. 2+0=2, and 20-2=18. Notice that 18 also has the same symbol as 9.
Get where i'm going? any 2-digit number that you can think of, when put through the gopher's formula, has the same symbol next to it. gopher mixes the symbols up every time you try it, so you hardly ever get the same symbol.
