Monthy Flash Upload Limit

I know there is a limit to upload 2 a day, but that totals 60 a month, depending on the month obviously. There should be a limit of say, 30 a month maybe? Just to cut down on users submiting tons of crap, how many people can make even 30 decent flash in a month, lol.

-This is inspired by Digg and a review and PM I got, what about a time-limited edit option for reviews and BBS post (I know that editing in general is rejected, but what about time-limited). I got a PM from a reviewer about a day later about how he regretted the review right after he sent it in. I also know myself that I got a nagging feeling in the back of my head that I'm missing something in the review, then remember it seconds after submitting it.

Score requirements for flashes under judgement:
I think that the scores required for a flash submission to pass judgement should be risen. This could decrease the number of spam flashes by quite a bit.

100 votes: 1.0
150 votes: 1.25
200 votes: 1.60

could become:

100 votes: 1.5
150 votes: 1.75
200 votes: 2.0

I do see a lot of crappy flashes get through judgement with scores like 1.7, so I think the requirements should be risen.

A small flash based doodle pad to have in your profile, like a lil post-it note flip book that you can mess around with within the limits of a few frames, and you should be able to save your lil animation to your user page for others to look at.

I have a few more ideas, and I don't think these have been said before:

I previously said that file-swapping was an issue that probably needed some kind of portal-mod system to stop. I still think portal mods would be a good idea (Wade alone is, after all, just one person in a sea of garbage and abusive flashes), but for the specific issue of file-swapping, it may be as simple as just removing the 'edit' button for submitted flashes. Simply telling flash authors that any change, regardless of how minor, would mean the flash has to go through the judgement filter again would decimate the ability of any file-swapper to spam the portal with crap.

As for new ideas, I have 3 so far:

1). Remove the 'Politics' forum. It was a good idea, but the sad fact is that very few people go out of their way to read the things in there. For all the other forums, this isn't so bad; all you do is post a question and wait until you get an answer. However, for topics related to politics, the more views you get on something, the more useful the thread is. This creates an annoying dilemma: "do I post a discussion topic in the politics forum, where it's likely to get about 5 replies before it drops off the front page, or do I post it in the general forum, where a much better discussion will be generated, but it'll likely be locked (due to being in the wrong forum) before any real conclusion is reached?" Merging the General and Politics forums would solve this, as well as allow for other discussions that are 'grey areas', where topics could be construed as being political by some, and scientific or religious to others (no-one would refrain from posting a decent topic just because they're not sure where it's supposed to go).

2). Review mod tools for removing author comments. Thanks to the whistle system, most of the abuse NG got has been removed. However, I've recently noticed that about 95% of the remaining verbal abuse is in the author's responses to reviews, rather than the review itself. Some review mods have said that it would be good if people could flag just the author response (as opposed to the whole review), since a review can't be removed just because the author is spamming retarded comments (I understand such an action would make it very easy for authors to remove reviews that they don't like, just by being morons in the response box). I think it's time that review mods got the ability to get rid of this kind of spam, as the vast majority of the existing verbal abuse on NG is currently untouchable with the current rules and standards.

3). This isn't a particularly important thing, but I thought it would be a good idea if regular users could see how many unopened PMs a mod or admin has. The reasoning behind this is based on the fact that sometimes mods can get dozens, if not hundreds, of PMs a day, and get none on others. Personally, if I wanted to PM someone over something I found, I'd like to know I wasn't giving an already overloaded mod one more thing to deal with, while another mod currently has nothing to do. It may help even out the amount of work that each mod has to do, but (since I'm not a mod), I really can't say on this one. I suppose you'd have to ask them about this.

I did a control+f search for "png" throughout this thread and I am surprised this hasn't been suggested.

The NG BBS should be compatible with .png images. The main reason for this would be for images in photoshop threads to have transparent backgrounds. On many photoshop threads people don't take the time to properly cut out images and you end up with sloppy cut outs, and cutting out an image may be very time consuming. Currently people sometimes get around this by posting an image with a solid background or linking to a .png image, but the process would go much more smoothly if .png formats were accepted.

Okay guys and girls I'm not trying to be difficult here but does anyone else

think that the Flash game submissions and the Flash animation submissions

should have their own sections when they are first uploaded to be judged

for Daily top and weekly top places?

Cause at the end of the day the Flash Games usually (not always) take top places.

Now if I saw a great game I'm going to choose it over a great animation.

Games are in a league of their own.

And great animations are being pushed aside for games. (I'm not against games I love them I
just think it's like making us choose
if a runner or a swimmer is better)

Just a thought.

What do you all think?

**Audio Portal- and don't say "meh" cause it's not to do with flash >:( the flash portal is fine.
Thar should be an extra comment list (seperate to reviews) so everyone that votes has to comment, 0, 5 or whatever - saying a word or two to sum it up.

Kinda like a chatbox thing where it lets you flag abusive comments and has the vote they gave next to the comment - but if that happened the script of the audio voting would have to be changed, as less people would vote.

People would be scared to 0 bomb for no reason for fear of us knowing who it is.

if you can't see the picture your computer specifications are too bad :P

when I said 0, 5 - I meant 0 to 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) xD misunderstanding, sorry^^

That's why I wonder about the amount of people who won't bother voting because they have to leave a comment, and can't be bothered; thus, the script would need to be changed.

*I think that on the list of names of people who created a thread, Mod's names should be green.
*I think we should have the number of threads we made as a counter (Post count, Thread count)
*I think likewise we should be able to view them all in a list (Posts, Threads).

Also, if you DO decide we can upload our own Level Images/Weapons, you should have it that we can only switch it to an alternative once a month. So that way people don't frequently change their icons and the whole forum becomes a sort of visual mess. But if they for some reason don't like what they uploaded, they can have the option to go back to the NG original icon whenever they want.

THE FLASH LIMIT SHOULD BE RAISED TO 15MB.

There has been several flash submissions nowadays with 10mb+ file sizes. I'm sure this will make it a lot easier on everyone (including collab hosts) to submit their work without ruining the movie by over-compressing their work. Also it will save Tom, Wade, and the other admins time so they don't have to manually place more and more movies onto the portal. And I'm sure people working on a big 10mb+ movie wants to get their work on the portal as soon as possible.

Besides, people can read the file size on the side of the screen, so if they know how much bandwidth they have, and how much they have left, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I think that the signature box should be bigger. I mean you can only see one line when you are imputing your sig, if you could make the box a few more pixels in height then that would make alot of difference.

What about adding a Podcast section to the NG audio portal? I would love to be to have my own talk show type thing and post it here on NG. I think allot of other users would enjoy this as well just to get there voices out there. I also do not think it would be to difficult to implement. You would simply be adding another category to the portal and what ever database's you use. Everything else is already implemented.

make it easier to un-coauthor people on a flash, especially if it has multiple coauthors.

I just took someone off the coauthor list on one of my old flashes and it took like ten minutes. I had to remove most of the other coauthors just to get to the account that I was removing, then go back to the movie page to get the rest of the coauthors to add them back.

Extra/option and perhaps custom blocks and/or tabs in our profiles? Such as Equipment (for audio artists), Awards, NG (or otherwise) events attended, etc. or even custom blocks you could code yourself? It could make certain actions on newgrounds more convenient (ie looking up a list of all of the awards a user has instead of looking through each submission and checking the submissions individually to check the awards), and remove the need for various user-generated lists (ie the audio artists' equipment list) - giving quicker, more convenient control the entrants of the list and making it easier and more convenient to look up the information of a particular user instead of having to look up a list of users and their information that isn't known to a large amount of users.

Thankyou ^_^

I think we need a Bigger FAQ button.
New users obviously fail to see the FAQ because it's hidden by the Games and Movies buttons, which is proven since there are so many threads asking "How do I deposit?"

Vote Confirmation
OK, so there's this shitty flash that's under judgement, you watch it, and vote 5 without properly looking. You think "Oooooooooops..."

I've done this before :(

So I think that when you click on the voting button, a little window should come up saying "Are you sure you want to vote x? Y/N" where x is the number you voted. Clicking yes will submit your vote, clicking no will let you change your vote.

Considering the amount of great music on the audio portal, is it wrong to ask for an online playlist editor for NG members?

The favorites section is pretty useful, but having to navigate to a new web page every 3 minutes or so can be annoying when working on something that requires complete attention (I'm writing a book).

So, the question is... Will it be possible to add playlists to NG accounts?

If not, why not?
Will it dramatically increase bandwidth usage?
Too many other things to do?

Your thoughts.

A few songs I submitted in current times received scores significantly lower than when I submitted them a little over a year ago. There is not much we can do to change the zero-bombing, but there is stuff we can do to detect it and help prevent its effects.

First, make the number of votes per score visible for each song. e.g.:
5: 1 vote
4: 0 votes
3: 0 votes
2: 0 votes
1: 0 votes
0: 15094 votes
This facilitates actual "zero-bomber" detection.

Second, make it a requirement for a person to listen to an entire song before being able to rate. After all, if they haven't listened to the entire thing (or at least turned the volume down while they waited for the song to finish) then they shouldn't be qualified to rate it.

Third, make the "zero" vote count less for those users who consistently vote zero on songs, because there is a greater chance that they are zero-bombers than people who only occasionally vote zeros. A similar voting system has been implemented on IMDB, where the votes of people who consistently vote 0s and 10s count less whenever they vote 0s or 10s respectively.

Fourth, although this may be pushing it a bit, restrict voting temporarily (e.g. a few days) for those who consistently zero-bomb; this acts as a clear consequence to their zero-bombing behavior.

OF course fix the Audio pages "recent submissions" and "Best tracks" buttons
- It would be easier for anyone to find songs, that the user doesn't know the names of, to eliminate the search audio bar...

To prevent spamming, Submissions, to pass judgment, have to gain a average of 1.5 to pass, and a moderator's approval.
- This will limit spamming and bad submissions severely, thus, cleaning the portal.
Argument - This could be a hassle for the mods, so annoying, there could be MANY submissions submitted and not enough mods to get to them all.

I tried to not resubmit already asked questions, but this forum is too LONG. I hoped this is read by you:liljim :)

im sure PG and the staff emptied alot of ideas for the chat, but here's a few extras, just in case they havent been thought of:

For the chatroom:

- webcam support
- a special "games chatroom", where simple games could be played, suggestions would be "NG-quizz" or other quizz, perhaps simpler games like chess or something similiar... would best be incorporated with the portal somehow, so that users could actually make games, and then use the chatroom to play them!

I think something that NG really needs is a message or section in your account page that notifys you if any of your favourites/friends/buddies have submitted or updated flash/audio. This way you can keep up with your favourite artists and never miss out!

My idea is based on the feature of posting flash URL's that auto turn into previews

: (if it doesn't work you probably know what i meant)

Why not do this for URL's to BBS topics, News Blogs and Audio as well. This would be easier than having to use the HTML tool to paste the link and then write the tittle of the contained link. It makes posts that contain nothing but a link look more informed and less like a +1 post. (Also links sometimes break)

Let the previews work when posted other places outside of the BBS, such as Blogs and/or comments on Blogs. PM's, Flash/Audio Author Comments and when using the Second Secret. I'm assuming that reviews are out of the question.

Here's a rough idea of what it could look like if it helps.

Posted already but it was locked and I was pointed here.

I dont know how feasible it would be to actually implement, but I think it would be an excellent idea to apply the Blam/Protect system to the audio portal. To keep exp in check both portals could give five not ten, that way, the audio portal would be much less ignored, and jokesters like this guy wouldnt stay around long to incinerate our fragile hearing, (and my expensive speakers for that matter) and it would surely bring down the number of 12 second long podcasts as well.

seems like an hard idea but here I go...

The only thing I really want on this site is a link or space in your profile (or the frontpage, you understand the process) that put the new flash submissions from our favorite flash/audio artist in that space...like youtube and his suscribing application(even if I know newgrounds is different then youtube) because some of my favorite artist are not frontpaged or ''popular'' so this option can be a really helpful one.

Have a good day running the site 'mates!

I have a few minor suggestions for the existing and upcoming portal's which may or may not have already been considered.

* Allow flash artists to upload .fla's of their characters in the Art Portal so other artists may use them in their flash movies.

* Allow sound effects to be uploaded to the Audio Portal.

* Tutorial category for the Lit Portal which will allow authors more flexibility such as the ability to incorporate visual aids/ examples to the users. Along with this comes user inputted tags and descriptions of what their tutorial focuses on.. I'm not sure if this is more fit for the Art or Lit Portal, maybe they could somehow be linked together, or maybe there should just be a tutorial portal for all types of tutorials?
