Now, let me commence the questions: this game is about the battle of two goddesses, Freya (which is also a name for a rock band, if l am not mistaken) and Hel.
Do they really exist?
...as far as I know, yeah. I know Hel is pretty much the goddess of, well, Hel, and about Freya, I don't know that much. Of course our Thul would be able to provide much more insight, I imagine.
As our Jarl have given the correct answer, I'll just try to add a little bit more knowledge.
Hel is the personification of Death, but unlike for example the Grim Reaper, she doesn't walk about collecting the souls, she just sits in Helheim waiting for them to come to her. So she's not really evil, even if she is a child of Loki and a giantess (Angerboda I think her name was). She is describes as half of her body being corpse pale and the other blue (The Vikings didn't have the colour black instead they used blue, as in Blåmannaland or Blue Man Land for Northern Afrika and Blåmän or Blue Men for black Africans).
Freya is the goddess of lust and lovemaking, (and also of love), and thus life. Which make her the opposite of Hel, making a conflict between the two at least plausible. She lives in Asgard which lies in the Realm of Godheim. Se below for more.
And is Asgard a real city or a celestial one?
I'd think it would be celestial, seeing as how the only way in is after you die.
And only if you die a noble death. Otherwise you party with Hel.
According to the Edda the Vikings believed that the universe consisted of nine worlds.
1. Muspelheim - The Land of Fire
2. Alfheim - The land of the Elves
3. Vanaheim - The Land of the Vanir (the other godly race, from which Frey, Freya and Njord comes)
4. Godheim - The land of he Gods. In Godheim lies Asgard - the City of the Aesir.
5. Mannheim - The Land of Man. And in the middle of Manheim lies the huge fortress Midgard, the City in the Centre.
6. Jotunheim - The Land of the Giants.
7. Svartalfaheim - The Land of the Dark Elves or Dwarves
8. Helheim - The Land of the Dead
9. Nifelheim - The Land of Mist and Shadows
There's is usually some kind of connection between two adjacent realms, but the most famous one is Bifrost, the bridge between Godheim and Mannheim. Bifrost means approximately "the trembling bridge" and is the rainbow. I've read somewhere that it was possible for the living to travel to Godheim, if you knew the secret, but I can't recall any stories of something like it.
