Was thinking about replacing my old TV with a new once and was wondering whether or not HD is really all it's cracked up to be. This might sound like a weird question since HD is supposed to be much better than regular TVs. However, I went to a friend's house to watch a movie a couple days ago and he had one of those new fancy HD ones. When we watched the movie, I couldn't help but to notice how clear everything looked.
Now, some of you may say that's what is so good about the TV. However, I mean the TV was so clear that the entire movie was kind of less enjoyable simply because it was so clear everything looked kind of fake like a video game.
Just curious what everyone's thoughts or experiences are with HD TVs and whether or not I should get one.

IMO HD TV is nothing special. I never seem to notice much difference in the picture quality either.

HDTVs are awesome, but you need a HD outputting device to fully enjoy it (PS3, blu ray player, HD freeview, Sky HD, freesat, whatever). Whenever I'm at a friends house and watching tv, playing on their ps3/wii/360, whatever, and it's a SD TV.. I'm just glad I bought a HDTV. The difference between MGS4 on HD and SD is unbelievable, lol.

Yeah HD is worth it. It looks WAY different than SD and is especially good for video game consoles.

If you have a cable box, you have to upgrade it to an HD reciever so the picture looks a lot better.

If it looked "fake", then it's probably the movie's fault. Not the high-definition infrastructure. Either that or you're probably just not used to it. I'd give you a prescription for a nature show or two on Discovery Channel HD.

Yeah, it's worth it I reckon. But I think the prices on them are ridiculous.

well if u get a HD tv, like a 40-60 inch, your going to need a HD dvd player/bluray player(ps3 :3)
and if u want to watch TV like, mtv etc xD, your going to have to buy a HD package from ur supplier..now i live in the UK and there are not that many HD channels around..like we got sky sports and some documentary channels..and a couple movie ones but for the price i really dont think its worth it.
however, HD viewing is really good, great quality etc.
get it if u has the monies, if u dont, well..dont bother.

The only bad thing about HD is that if you watch stuff in 480i or w/e is the lowest it looks a little worse. I was watching the Bourne Identity on my new LCD that I got a month ago and it looked freaking amazing on that.

I love my HDTV but it makes the regular channels come in really crappy (They already do because our provider sucks... That means you Time Warner), but the HDTV makes it look even worse. The HD channels totally make up for it though.

I've never really noticed that on my HDTV. I mostly use the HD for watching sports though, not movies since I don't have a bluray or HD-DVD player.

In my opinion HD makes watching TV and playng video games more enjoyable. Not to mention doesn't it depend on what year the movie was made? I mean you can look at a normal TV and see the fakeness in parts of movies pre 2005.

The best thing about an HD-TV is playing Xbox 360 or possibly PS3. You get to see the full capability of the system, and it's very crisp.
If you get an HD-TV you won't be able to experience HD television unless you have a cable box or satellite dish that has HD Channels available and that you have subscribed to. There's only a handful of TV shows filmed in HD, and it costs a lot of money each month to get the channels.
You're better off watching movies on an HD compatible computer with a widescreen monitor, and watching normal TV on your normal TV.

I downloaded a couple of the HD adverts for my PS3 and tried them with and without the HDMI cable.
There was definitely an improvement with the HDMI cable but it's one of those things that you won't actually notice until it's gone.

What you are missing is something very important called aesthetic distance. Most people nowadays want to feel as though they are a part of the action on the screen. If you feel that some of the magic is gone from the screen with high-definition, congratulations! You are in good company. There is too much emphasis these days on realism. I personally hate high-definition TV; it's like looking through a window and the movie or program loses its dreamlike quality. I refuse to buy a high-definition TV ever.
Sincere regards,
Aidan Anstey

It might sound weird, but sponge bob is much better in HD.

Well I was playing counter strike on my new TV and it looked perfect
Then my uncle being selfish took that one and gave me the old one
So I turned it on and after watching HD for half a year it looked really grey
like Gears of War grey which was odd
Then the Electricity went out :(

If you do get one, be aware of HD Lag. In a game where it requires precise movements, it's going to hurt you.

Asking if High Definition is good or bad is like asking if 16 bit audio is better than 32 bit.

Honestly, I don't really notice the difference, i'm usually too engrossed in the movie/game.
That said, I did get a new tv for Christmas just for the hell of it.

Take this mans advice. And check out Planet Earth of BluRay.
When buying your new TV, you get what you pay for. I'm a big fan of the Samsung panels.
