In reference to movies, tongue-in-cheek is a style that stays loyal to a genre but isn't meant to be taken seriously. But at the same time it isn't a parody and doesn't claim to be. Like in Shaun of the Dead, where the movie follows the formula of a zombie movie but has alot of subtle humor. It's not meant to be taken seriously but isn't a parody like Scary Movie.
