Which is harder?

Pros and Cons:

Swimming:
- using all parts of body
- studies show burns more calories than running
- improves joints, lungs and muscles the most
- no sweat, rare side ache
- shorter distance

Running:
- longer distance
- only using legs and only improves them
- sweat

I personally think swimming is harder, personally, and ive been on a really serious swim team for 2 years. what do you think is harder, newgrounds?

I'd rather swim 3 miles than run 2 laps around a track.

That's just me, swimming is pretty fun for me, even if it's tiring. It isn't as agonizing as running.

Swimming is better in my opinion, because it uses all your muscles, and I have yet to hear about someone that blew out his knees or ankles swimming.

My computer's breaking down, so nope.

Swimming for is a much better full body workout than running.

You sweat when you swim. Any time your body temperature starts to rise, your body sweats. It doesn't matter if your immersed in water or snow for all the body cares. The brain will cause your sweat glands to secret sweat if your body temperature increases. Everyone sweats when they swim, it's great exercise.

Now as to which is better, it's debatable. I for one think that it's easier to run for a longer period of time than it is to swim. That means you get more cardio than with swimming. However, for building overall body strength, upper body especially, swimming wins out. If you're interested in building up leg strength then running wins out.

Swimming is more difficult because less people know how to do it.

Running is more convenient to me, because I can run anywhere I like. I can't, however, swim anywhere I like due to the need for a swimming pool or a general abundance of water.

I'm talking purely from an exercise point of view, of course. I combine running and weights training, so I get pretty much the same deal out of my exercise regime anyway. If we're talking competitive... well, I've never been that into competitive swimming, and was more of a sprinter myself. So I guess, running for me either way.

Swimming
Only upper body
Depends on what you do
Not really
You still sweat, you still ache if you don't stretch afterwards
Again, depends on what you do (Olympics had a 1500m race, that's 100m short of a mile)

Running
Once again, depends on what you do (see above)
And lungs, plus, running builds a natural antioxidant system
Is sweat really that bad?
Track girls are freaks (In a very, very good way)

I do triathlons, and personally the swimming to bike transition is pure hell. But between swimming and running, yeah, swimming (3 miles btw) sucks the worse.

Well, Not all of us girls have broad shoulders speaking as a female competitive swimmer of 6 years now.

Anyway back to the subject, I did track before swimming and it really only works out your legs with swimming if you dedicate enough time and effort into it you will work out your entire body.

Well distance shouldnt really matter becuase you can change it for either one.

Swimming is a much better exercise as your using more muscles and working your lungs more when you have to hold your breath, it's very low impact so you can't fuck your joints up like in running.

But if your training for something other than swimming your better of doing some running, because your only really benefit is from improved lung capacity.

I prefer running just because I can't stand exercising in the same spot for too long. Swimming back and forth in a pool just drives me mad. Don't get me wrong, I think swimming can be fun if you are playing in the water with people, but I'd rather go to a forest preserve (many in my area) and run past the lakes and breath the fresh air.

I am a new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.

I do them too that's sweet. Although I was competitive swimmer for 5 years, and I can tell you the run was the hardest for me, just because I'm so used to swimming.

To the comparison, I believe to be the most fit, swimming and running incorporated into your workout plan would be most beneficial!

Hey, smart one, Swimming works EVERY muscle in the body, not just the upper body, shows how much you know about swimming.

doing 4 years of swimming and 3 of track and field, I have to say.

Both are pretty tied.

Look at it like this, in running, you need to know how to breathe/stride. No one Focuses on this as much as you focus on technique in swimming, and the best way to increase strides and steady your breathing is by training hard.

Then you have Swimming, if you have the technique down, your pretty much good to go, but its a lot harder to the equivalent of running laps in the water.

I think they are both hard in their own way, some people have a talent for running, as others have a talent for swimming.

I'd prefer to run any day...Especially since I have a dark fear of deep water.

Which I probally started the phobia when I fell off a ferry at the age of 4...Ever since then I can't stand the sea or deep water.

Fucking scary shit man...Drowning is probally the worst way to go.

If your reading this, then why do you care?
