I've heard a lot of people saying the end of the world is in 2012 (inb4 OMG UNORIGINAL THREAD STFU 2012 ISN'T THE END OF THE WORLD OLOLO N00B) and we're all gonna die.
I know it's bullishit, but how did this bullshit come about? What's supposed to be happening to cause the end of the world? Why are we all gonna die in 2012?

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012, so it's supposed to be like they predicted the earth's demise.

They're not historic events, per se, but astrological events, like the death of a star, a solar eclipse happening hundreds of years after they predicted, things like this.
