So, this year for Media Studies, I have to do some research into the effects of violent films on violent behavior of children (i.e does it cause violence in children's behavior). As part of the research I have to ask the opinions of users on an internet forum, so here I am asking you, Newgrounds. Do you think that violence in films can cause violent behavior of children? (a child being any one under the age of 18).

To a certain extent, yes. If the child is already easily influenced by his peers, family or what he/she sees on television, then violent films could encourage that behaviour even further.

Ah yeah I never thought to put it in politics :S
Do you think the Mods will have a problem with it if I post it there as well? It could be interesting to compare reply's between the general forum and the polotics.

I don't think it's films because a parent would never let a child see something violent unless the parent knows the child wouldn't imitate it. I mostly blame cable televsion and the kids around that certain child because sometimes you don't know what that child is watching or what he/she and their friends are doing when they're at school.

I think it has to do more with how you were raised, as a kid I watched tons of classic horror films but I never was a very violent kid. It just varies from kid to kid and the environment they grew up in.

It probably doesn´t affect kids at all. Me and my childhood friends all watched violent movies/played violent games as a kid and we all turned out normal. There really isn´t any proof that it has anykind of affect on children.

It could, but children shouldn't be watching violent films to begin with. Thus the rating system and stuff like that.

Hail fellow media student.
I would say that films do not cause people to commit violent crimes yet it is clear that people can pick up speach etc. from films, as such it is possible that like picking up languages people might also pick up the actions, in this case it may very well lead to mimicing violent acts.
Does that help?

It depends, if you have a 4 year old watch lets say, a Quitin Tarintino movie then maybe it could fuck him up but at the same time no. Its the reason why though rating systems where made so kids couldnt watch that or play that game. I for one am a fan of violence, I practically play the same games the columbine shooters (GTA, Resident Evil, etc) and I have had no urge or willing to bring a shotgun into school and start shooting the place up. Look at history way before video games, Romans would feed people to starved lions and have to people fight to the death for amusment. Hitler was a sadistic fuck and he was around before video games where even a concept. It all just depends on surroundings and upbringing, not ones source of entertainment.

it depends on the child's mental stability i would say no and it is a bunch of puppy-cock to say movies or video games effect a child most of the time they are crazy or made fun of way to much leading to, do to speak,"snaping point" were they bring a CAR-15 to school walking down the halls pumping round after round into his or her classmate or suicide *cough* Jeremy *cough* pearl jam*cough* but seriously it is always a pre-existing mental issue or outside provoker.

i really think that if the child isnt disciplined correctly and left with an unsocialble mind... but yes i do think violent movies do have an effect on children
if they dont have a role model they will find one that looks cool and this role model might be a ninja or a guy with guns or something like that

I'll help you out.
Lotsa kids like to play imaginary role-playing games. You know like pretending to be like Jedi's and stuff and having pretend fights. Anyway most of the time these ideas come from movies. I remember when I was younger me and my friend would pretend to be people in the Matrix and fight agents and stuff. So yes movies can cause kids to act violent things in that way.

Possibly, but in my case, that's a definite NO. I've been to Hell and back with regard to violent films, or depictions of violence in any medium, for that matter, and I'm fine! They have no effect on me. I've never killed anyone in my life, and certanly not because of a violent film!

I've watched violent films since I was a baby and have never committed any violent crime. Violent films do get addicting after a while though, you tend to crave the visceral pleasure of watching murder(even if it's fake).

Some of the most depraved thinks they're normal, it happened plenty of times.

I believe the worst thing it does is desensitize us. I don't think it would inspire violence, though, unless there is a mental instability in the person.

Under 18?
Well fuck that, maybe under 8, but a "child under 18" sounds like hyper-MPAA nonsense.

Children copy what they see, so it's true to say that an immature child is likely to copy violence in films because films sometimes seem to glorify violence. Adults, ("mature" people) aren't likely to copy violent films as they already know and understand the difference between fantasy and reality. That said, there are a lot of idiots about.

Growing up, all I watched were horror and action flicks, with people being tortured, etc etc etc.
I don't think it did any harm to me, I mean, I am sadistic and stuff, but I think that's just a part of who I am, some studies said that violent films and video games have no effect on humans.
Who knows though.
Yeah, whatever.
