Well, there is a scenario in the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. In about 2130, the United States had cut itself off from the world and it was pretty much self sustained. America became the world's leader in spacecraft technology. The rest of it is in the book.

Something you may also wish to consider is that there would be no war.

And what makes you think that?

The American people together make up a hive-mind consciousness known as "America". Every being in America (the super consciousness, not necessarily the land mass) can channel and represent America to varying degrees, the most prominent channeler now being Steven Colbert.
It is because of that that one can ask a question to America, and get an actual answer.

Me and my family were talking a lot about America over dinner tonight, about it's significant presence in the world and how it affects other countries' economies.

America is enormous, and is home to many of the world's top business chains and corporations. Surely without America's presence, the rest of the world would suffer greatly.

If America was shut off completely from the rest of the world; no exports/imports, no tourism, no one leaving, no one coming, would it still be able to thrive? Do you think it could become even more profitable?

.

I would also urge people replying to give a valid reason for their choice. i.e. Not just a "Yes" or "No" kind of post.

It would hurt us, but we'd survive.
We would still have plenty of places to get food, coastal areas, rich farmland.
But it would cause an economic crisis, thats for sure. But that applies to any nation on earth.

That would put our economy to ruins. Then it will kill our research and power and other. America's economy is based on consumers. Without trade, we'd fall. We depend on other countries as other countries depend on us.

If USA became isolated, not only will our economy fall but other countries will experience enormous drops of their economy as well. The world will slow down as in research, technology, investments, materials, everything.

id say the current economy would obviously fall, a new economic and social structure would be born, and life would evolve and adapt as such.

So I've been looking through your replies, and a lot of people have jumped to the conclusion that I either believe this or that. All I have done is asked a question. I want to see what your replies are to that question. You can start criticising and commenting when you know for certain what my beliefs are.

Anyway, I'm going to PM a few of the people in the thread over the next few hours.

What a retarded question.

Of course it would stand to lose a shitload, if it were to cut itself off from the rest of the globe.

A country's might and wealth is measured in it's INFLUENCE OVER OTHER COUNTRIES, and it's been that way for millennia.

And THAT basic principal has pretty much been transformed into a non-violent, yet more invasive form of control, in the last 20 years or so...a.k.a. Globalism.

What I'd like to know, given how simple the answer, is the POINT you folks are trying to make here.

Pure awesomeness. You must read it.

So its complicated. We'd survive, but we'd have to tap other powersources because we don't have nearly enough oil. Meh, the rest of the world would addapt after suffering a depression of sorts.

[nods in agreement] couldn't of said it any better myself, but i'd like to add we would also suffer from lack of video game imports
