Well it's not really new as such, infact it's an oldie to replace my shitbox Subaru. I'm looking for an Alfa Romeo Sprint. I just think they are fucking cool and I could probably pick one up for a very reasonable price (although maintainance could be a real bitch, Alfa's are not the most reliable of cars.) And they supposedly drive really well.

I just think they are so cool, and I think I could live with one. And I want something a little different than everyone else.

What do you think of my mad idea? Should I just buy a normal car like everyone else?

Picture of one for win:

As much as I Iike Alfas, I wouldn't. They are great cars, don't get me wrong, but the reliability issues spoil the appeal for me. The problem is exacerbated by the fact you're looking at an old Alfa, more likely to cause trouble.

Basically, were it me I would look elsewhere.

Do you own one? After about 120,000km they go from reliable as my mother's cooking to an awful piece of CRAP. Since I hit the 120,000km on my Legacy, it's been diabolical to own, sunroof leaking, wheel alignment is shocking (I'm getting it done every two months at the moment), interior falling apart. Plus mine's a car that needs a turbo, but doesn't have one and it has a cruddy automatic gear box making it about as fast as a turtle on holiday.

Yeah, but it's just too nice to ignore. Plus there is a really good Alfa mechanic in town supposedly, so I am quitely confident about keeping it in order.

I know I should, but I don't know if I will...

Why don't you just go ahead and get a Ford Pinto or a VW Rabbit, they all look about the same and the maintenance would be a lot cheaper. But then of course you would get the lol factor from everyone.

Cause Pintos and Rabbits don't exist in dear old New Zealand and I want a small 1980's sports coupe/hatch.

But an old school Volkswagen Scirocco on the other hand...

Why? I keep it in a garage, I get it serviced ever 6 months, I clean it occasionally (Okay I gave up on that,) I don't drive like a maniac.

Mine's a 1997 and it's the last time I accept a car off my parents even if it was free, no wonder my father wanted to get rid of it.

I would say go for a "regular" car. The repair & maintainance costs would be through the roof. IMO, it's not worth the hassle.

For cheap, fun, fairly reliable transport you can't beat my new motor.

Sure, I've sacrificed safety, carrying capacity, safety , warmth and safety, but at least I have, ummm, less tyres to inflate! Yeah!

I'd really recommend motorbiking. It's cheaper to learn, buy and insure than a car. I went from never riding a bike to a full licence and a 600cc bike in about two months.

Oh you don't need an alfa romeo.

You don't have to settle for something as average as a toyota camry either. get something like a used bmw or acura. It's not that expensive if it's used.

You can still get a good luxury car for a good price, but you don't have to buy a sports car like that, especially because the bigger the engine, the more gas it consumes.

I don't need a Gretsch Guitar either, but it doesn't stop me from wanting.

Yeah, my best friend has already got the BMW, I want to be different and sporty. Luxury doesn't worry me.

Yeah, a 1.5 litre engine isn't that bad though for economy. Infact I would go as far to say it is more economical than your average luxury car. That Alfa is pretty much a small hatch as much as it is a sports car.
