McCain selects female woman as VP 2008-08-29 11:28:21 Reply

Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, is going to be McCain's running mate for the election.

She's also even younger than Obama. I don't know if this will actually help to win any votes for McCain, aside from rabid Clinton supporters who thought that there was extreme sexist bias in the primaries.

However, it's still pretty funny. There was so much kerfuffle over who Obama was going to choose as a running mate, and he totally gets sandbagged by McCain.

I find the title of this thread funny. He picked a female women, as opposed to a male woman, right? :P. I also find it funny that each campaign has an old experienced washington insider (McCain, Biden) and a inexperienced history maker (Obama, Palin)

I think this is a pretty good choice. It'll stop all those Obama supporters from yelling about a historic election, and she'll bring in suburban moms and social conservatives, that may have been suspicious about McCain before, to the ticket. He'll also be able to wave off the idea his is a campaign of Washington insiders. Problem is, he takes away a lot of the oppurtunity to bash Obama's inexperience, because even Obama is way more experienced than Palin. Another problem is name recognition. Not many people outside of Alaska know about her.

As a Alaska maverick, the McCain campaign will be able to say they are a campaign of mavericks.

I dislike all this stuff about her having a baby with down syndrome. It's so sexist. If a man was running with a down syndroime baby, no one would care. But because she's a women she's expected to take of the baby at the same time as being VP.

I'm sorry, the redundant thread title cracks me up.

Still, I think it's a cheap political move. It's an obvious ploy to have an "I did it first" ticket, too.

Sounds like we can't keep the women and the blacks in their respective fields (kitchens).

Before you know it we'll have a black woman running foreign affairs.

I think it's a stupid move on Mccains part, her only use as a VP is possibly getting him more votes, nothing wrong with her per say(except that firing someone becuase he wouldn;t fire his brother or w/e scandal) but she's really inexperienced. I mean as an actual VP WTF dose she bring to the table?

Its a horrible choice.

She has been governor for only 2 years and is under investigation from her own state over ethics. She has zero foreign policy and if McCain was elected would you really want her to be a heart beat from being President? McCain just lost all base for the experience angle, and is obviously trying to get the women vote and voters of Clinton. He is so out of touch, you can't just get a woman from left field and say vote for her because shes a woman, what about the other republican women much more qualified than her?

The other confusing thing here is that he probably won't get the rabid Clinton vote for this, since Palin is staunchly anti-abortion.

Election wise this is a good move. But I agree. McCain's old, what if he dies in office (very real possibility)? What will she do? She has absolutely no foreign policy experience. But, that's what vice presidents do: help the president get elected, and take over if he dies. Obviously Cheney is a big exeption, but most vice presidents don't do that much. FDR didn't even invite Harry Truman to cabinet meetings.

This might harm Obama a bit, actually. Obama-Biden is an excellent pair-up that covers all of its bases, but McCain-Palin takes away from that - she adds that hip, "fresh" feel to the campaign that McCain alone was missing. However, it also takes away McCain's argument of experience, which was a key theme in his campaign. Unfortunately, the average voter won't give a shit about that.

She's under investigation. This is beginning to get more interesting already.

McCain is like 72 years old and if he was to drop in office we'll leave the entire country in the hands of a GOVERNOR who is under investigation by her own state, ZERO Foreign policy experience!? Even in the midst of tentions between America and Russia!? AND SHE'S ONLY A HEARTBEAT AWAY FROM THE PRESIDENCY?! It is so obvious McCain picked this women mainly for getting some of the Hilary supporter's votes. Its like they are saying "HEY! Hilary Clinton supporters, Obama didn't pick Hilary but look over here we got a women! Come on over!!". This is not only a stupid decision on McCain's part; But it shows he has questionable judgement because we all know he picked her for the votes not for the good of this country.

Shocking. Just shocking.

This obliterates the "inexperienced" card from being used towards Obama's campaign. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't she just have like a bachelor in Journalism? She's served 2 years as governor, but that's hardly adequate.

She does get the hick vote though, for having a kid in Iraq and as a lifetime member of the NRA.

Bad choice from McCain's side.

I would have to disagree. McCain's experience evens it out for Palin, and choosing a female VP was an incredibly smart move.

He has been Senator for only 2 years and his friends are under investigation over ethics. He has zero foreign policy experience. Democrats are so out of touch, you can't just get a black man from left field and say vote for him because he's black and multicultural, what about the other democratic men much more qualified than him?

Now you see the beauty of it. There isn't anything the Obama campaign can fling at her that can't also be applied to their presidential candidate in some way.

Comparing Obama's experience with hers is just down right STUPID. Obama was a SENATOR this woman was a GOVERNOR. Republicans say they know nothing about Obama but this takes it into a whole different level. AND YES Obama has Foreign Policy experience did you even look at the democratic conventions? DID YOU NOT SEE Bush's administration AGREEING with Obama on the withdrawal of our troops in Iraq? Did you not SEE his voting record regarding foreign policy?? The point of a VP is to compliment the President. Obama's weaknesses makes up for it with Biden. McCain is OLD and has cancer it is a possibility sadly that he can passaway during his term. WILL YOU TRULY tell me that this woman is more qualified to become president then Obama?

This is a terrible choice for McCain. This "female woman" (had to, sorry) is being investigated by her own state because of a scandal. She has barely any experience in foreign policy and the likes, and she is definitely inexperienced. So it looks like McCain's experience "argument" is chopped even further down.

Biden vs. Palin. I'm certain that Biden will overcome this woman in the VP Debates. Now it's up to Obama to keep being aggresive against McCain while being motivational and charasmatic, just like he was in his speech last night.

That's definitely a biased view on things. Obama is a Senator, which is more experience than a governor when it comes to the federal government. Biden has been a member of the senate for longer than McCain, and Biden has the experience. Obama and Biden will, as part of their job, regularly have conversations with each other over what to do. Should Obama die, Biden will ascend, and we can be 100% confident in Biden.

But should McCain die, Palin has no experience nor would she have a VP to look forward to. On top of that, she's only a governor, and has no experience in federal government. McCain will be alone in making important decisions for the USA and it's foreign policies because he doesn't have experience to turn to. Obama, on the other hand, can always turn towards Biden.

A news station I was watching (I think it's CNN) was interviewing a Republican from New York. She said that Palin has more experience than Obama and Biden combined because "they have no experience in running anything". This just shows how much the Republicans lack any coherent argument against the Democratic ticket. Either that, or it just shows how ignorant and stupid that lady is when it comes to anything more complex than eating.

I just want to throw something out there to put this choice in perspective:

What if Governor Palin was male? What kind of vice presidential candidate would Palin make?

A pretty mediocre one by any objective view. A candidate with minimal experience, under ethics investigation, and a virtual unknown on the political scene. It's still to be seen how well she can speak to the public, but in my view of her speech with John McCain she seemed rather unsure of herself and a bit uneasy.

It's hard to deny that Her being female is a big part of her appeal, but having a uterus does not on it's own qualify one for political office.

Obama...
"Oh... he's a Muslim. He's Black. Can we trust him?"

Then he gets the pastiest guy I've seen...

McCain:
"He's old. He's a WASP. And... r-e-p-u-b-l-i-c-a-n... the most unpopular folks in power right now..."

Then he gets a VP... with a vag.

Wow...
Anyone see this being played out to the otherside?
(well duh.) Talk about pandering the otherside...

Although, who knows... let's give them the benefit of the doubt and let's say that they chose them to because of their experience.

But, in anycase... McCain as a President wouldn't upset me. (but, not enough to make me want for him...)

What the hell is up with you people?
Bush- Governor
Clinton- Governor
Reagan- Governor
Carter- Governor
Basically after Kennedy anyone who was president and NOT a governor was a vice president first.

Having two years experience as a governor is far better than two as a senator.
Being a governor is basically being the President of your state.
Being a senator has a lot less administrative opportunity than a governor does.
And I saw on the news something about her actually dealing with Russia over fishing rights.
Which gives her a lot more actual foreign policy experience than Obama.

Well yes, but then you also have to accept that you can't criticise obama for any of those things either, if your vice president is going to have all the same alleged "flaws". I find it interesting that McCain would pick out a vice president that is basically everything he's criticized Obama for.

What's funny is that her being a governor of 2 years is actually technically more executive experience than any of the other 3 running, lol.

The other 3 are senators. And even still, she has at least been on a council, comittee, and mayor before becoming a governor. Obama ran ahead for the presidency in barely even a year of being senator.

She does have an investigation though for "abuse of power". But so far, she has welcomed it and has cooperated fully with that investigation.

Obama can't really speak about it considering Biden's plagerism flap a while ago.

Even still, she does have executive experience for actually being a major and governor. And she's actually done something fairly big as well, taking on big oil Republicans in corruption cases (her being the whistle blower).

And then there's the fact that she's not the Presidential Nominee, but the VICE-Presidential nominee.

Have you ever seen an "on-the-street" interview of a person of any political opinion whatsoever where their position was even coherent, let alone compelling? News stations don't show insightful citizens, because otherwise people would have no reason to tune in to watch their personality commentators.
