Flash MX 2004 is the first "good" flash program, and I use flash 8. You can get MX 2004 online for about £80 ($160) and flash 8 for about £100 ($200), CS3 is basically flash 8 with a new interface and uses AS3 aswell, which I would not recomend for a begginer. If you are a student, you can get a student version for a fraction of the price. It is exactly the same, just you cant make money from it (well, I have flash 8 educational version and I made £30, and no ones going to arrest me) And flash MX is free I think, but the actionscript is really hard to use and so are motion tweens.
The best one (Flash) costs $700 but you can get it cheaper if you're a student. It's illegal to make money from the student version so if you get that you can forget about sponsorship/API/licencing.
Flash-the only true flash making program-is $700. Can you afford that?
Yes?
Then let's continue. A microphone will set you back another $20-$30, a decent tablet hits around $60-$70 dollars.
Still in your budget? Then let's move on.
The rest of CS3 ups flash's original cost to about $1500 dollars (including flash).
If I did my math correctly, a full professional set is gonna set you back...
$1600 dollars
Still wanna do flash?
Or you could get liveswif for zilch.
You don't need the extras. I've managed perfectly without them. Then again, I'm not really seriously animating/ programming yet.

I was just saying that the capabilities in CS3 greatly enhance the flash experience. Soundbooth lets you record your own sounds, photoshop, fireworks and illustrator are great design programs, and dreamweaver's good for coders looking into CSS, HTML, PHP, ColdFusion, that stuff.
Yeah, I use flash for my image editing.
Also, AS 3.0 is a good language to learn, even if you are a 'begginer.'
Eventually AS 2.0 will be outdated and everyone will be using 3.0 so might as well learn it first instead of having to learn them both.

Hopefully that day won't come any time soon, AS2 is great for me.

Flash MX is quite easily 'good'. Heck, apart from the lack of cookie-setting and line-drawing, Flash 5 is fine.
Frankly, if all you're doing is animating or making basic games, I'd say that Flash 5 is good enough for your needs. (The first version of Flash to include AS).
I personally use MX.
Pah. You kids with your blurs and your blends and your fancy effects... you don't know you're born. Back in my day we walked to Macromedia's office and handed in files WITH PAPER and we walked uphill both ways.

Id reccomend flash8 or 5 if your a cheap mother fucking bastard...wait im uppose to be supportive here :P
You could TRY CS3, but the layout is very hard to use for pasting bigge rlines of scripting, while flash 8 has a scrollbar so you can use that to check the whole script, or you could even try liveswif, but ive also heard some companies mking a 3d animatiing program...but it probaly will be shitty

Wow, way to be a bitch. The full CS3 is not necessary to make flash movies-- only Flash is. Other programs may help, but really aren't necessary at all. A mic and recording programs are good IF you plan to do your own recording, but if you're like me and depend on others for that sort of thing, that's unnecessary as well. The only thing on your little list that actually seems somewhat important is a Wacom tablet, which I do think is a very good tool. Also, Flash is available at student discount prices for only $250.
So if I've done my math correctly, making Flash will cost you...
$250.
not a large amount of money if you have a job or something similar.
Have fun :D
I personally would recommend flash 8. Simply because its a reasonable filesize, Its nice and sort of simple to use, Its only $600 now(used to be $1000), Still does a lot of the things CS3 Does, And you can basicaly make a joint animation with every program! Flash8=Compatible with MX And CS3=Compatible with flash 8. yay!

The only program to to make flash games/movies with, is FLASH!
Hence the name, Macromedia flash. I HATE n00bs who ask, "HOW DO MAKE FLSAH GAMSS???", thinking that there are a number of random programs that make flash games, like its a common executable, or a gif or something.
However, if you just have bad grammar and meant which version of flash, then forgive me.
I believe the latest is CS3. However, I only use 2004 still, and it works fine for me!

If you're planning on making simple games (point and click) or just animations, flash 5 or mx will work. However, if you want to do serious programming, I recommend flash 7, preferable flash CS3. Actionscript 2.0 supports object oriented programming (AS1 sort of did, with prototypes, but it was horrible to use), and AS3 fully makes the transition to OO programming, and tries to force good programming habits. (I've had issues where AS 2 responds very differently from within an object than in the timeline. Particularly with externally loading XML)
