Also, you said you were going to post the lightning tutorial here? I closed our AIM convo - sorry.
And I shall, as promised.
This is one quick and easy method for making lightning with Photoshop CS3 Extended that I picked up along the way. It can be used to make lightning for a variety of things. So here it is, for Sk8terGirl and anyone else out there in photoshop land who wants to add some spark to their art:
Lightning Tutorial #1
Open a new document and set the custom size to 400 or 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels long, with a resolution of 72 pixels/inch. (You can make the document wider or smaller depending on the size of the pic you are planning on adding the lightning to, bu for now this should give you decent resolution for most standard sized pics.)
Step 1: using the Gradient tool, draw a line from top to bottom starting about 4/5 of the way up from the bottom of the document. This will ensure that the lightning will appear near the middle of the document.
Step 2: (**Important: make sure your foreground color icon is set to absolute black**) go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. This will transform the gradient into grayish clouds with a black streak in the middle.
Step 3: press Ctrl+I to invert the colors making the clouds light gray with a white lightning-like streak in the middle.
Step 4: press Ctrl+L to bring up the "adjust lighting level" window. Move the little gray arrow in the middle all the way over to the right. Now the lightning should be clearly visible and surrounded by black.
Step 5 (optional): if you want colorful lightning rather than just the boring old white variety, press Ctrl+U to bring up the "color adjustment" window. Be sure to click the little button that says "colorize" in the bottom right corner, then play with the hue/saturation levels until you achieve the color you're looking for. If you want stronger and wider lightning, move the "lightness" setting up just a little. For darker, thinner lightning, move it down slightly.
Step 6: Now you can take your Rectangular Marquee Tool and copy/paste the image onto any pic. Once you have pasted it, go to the layer blending option ("fx" symbol in the bottom right corner of the workspace) and set the blend mode to Screen. The black will be completely removed leaving only the lightning.
Use the Move tool to adjust the size and move it into position, use the Eraser tool to remove excess haze and trim down what you don't want, use the Blur tool to smooth the haze edges and rough ends of your lightning, and you can also press Ctrl+L again (from Step 4) to make the lightning look even sharper.
Flatten the layers and you're finished.
Practice with this method a few times and it will become easy as riding a bike and smooth as a Swiss watch. Make multiple bolts, paste and layer flatten them together to make designs and electric effects to add to a project. When using colorful lightning, be sure to remember your color setting in Step 5 to make each bolt uniform. Another great tip is to take your Color Replacement tool and add minor highlights to surrounding objects to match the lightning. Have fun.
