Welcome to the New NG "Photoshoppers Club/Crew." The purpose of which is to have a centralized location for all the best and the brightest NG has to offer to come and share ideas, techniques, and, most importantly, to showcase their creative talents with picture editing programs.

The term "photoshop" is to be taken universally. You do not need Adobe Photoshop specifically to participate. Any picture manipulation software is acceptable and links as to where you can acquire them will be provided, as well as helpful tutorials and other info by experienced users. We do encourage anyone who wishes to take part to download an appropriate program, all comers are welcome.

Please read and stick to the following guidelines before posting:

- No MS Paint please. There are several free resources at your disposal which you can make better use of.

- Please refrain from posting "shops" containing racism, pornography, or overused memes, i.e. Bedn, shoop da woop, penises, Asian Face, etc. or any other picture which violates the Rules of the NG BBS.

- Original work only, please. Do not post a cleverly edited picture you simply found on the internet.

- If you would like to start a new theme for a photoshop contest, please feel free to contact Heinrich, Kart-Man, or myself to better co-ordinate your idea and see that it doesn't die instantly. We welcome new ideas and are willing to give advice to improve them and help in any way.

Overall, we would just like you to have fun and possibly learn and/or exchange your knowledge of photoshop with the rest of the community.

Photoshop Help

If you are new to photoshop, I suggest looking at these guidelines set by Ozcar.

First off, you need a Photo-manipulation program. There are many kinds with the most famous being Adobe Photoshop. Some are free while others are expensive. My best advice is grab the best program for you. I went through two other programs before finding one that I work with best. If you are not sure if the right program is for you, try the free trials and learn while you try it out. If it works best for you, buy it.

Free/Downloadable Pograms:
These are free but major drawbacks can include a lack of tools that professional programs have and can be very inefficient when it comes to professional photoshop.

GIMP
Paint.net

Professional Programs:
These are great photoshop programs money can buy. If you have cash to burn, these would be wise decisions.

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe FireWorks

Tutorials
Useful if you are new. Be sure to use these while you use your free trials on the ones you need to pay.

Photoshop
FireWorks
GIMP
Paint.net

------------------
------------------

Competitions Section

Every now and then we'll have friendly competitions. We will choose a theme and get to work on photoshop. The top three will be selected and posted on an account on Deviant Art.

The judges are TheJamoke, Kart-Man and Myself. We will judge the top three and get it posted for further reception on DA. If you do not want your piece to be on the DA account, please PM me and I'll take it off.

I'll handle the DA account.

Rules:
-Stick by the theme
-Be original (no memes)
-Can only submit one entry
-You have a week to post your art. We will unveil the theme on Sunday every once in a while and announce the winners on Saturday.
-Cash bribes only

Good luck and have fun.

I regularly deal with sigs and profile pics but I want to contribute something so I thought why not a tutorial! Right >.>

Lol anyways, this is a very basic tech border tutorial, I use adobe photoshop 7. If your thinking about creating a tech border than hopefully you have a good understanding of the program that your using and a very good imagination.

1. Start with a basic shape.
2. Begin forming a border, cut corners and round edges.
3. Use your imagination and begin cutting out shapes and things to create a cool image.
4. Use your layer styles and add colors, shadows, use bevel and emboss to make it pop.

Hopefully the picture is pretty self explanitory. If you want to you can add more layers to it and create an even more imaginitive border!

Feel free to contact me if you get any spam or what not, or memes. I'll delete and ban when necessary, but of course try to work out the problem on your own, gracefully, unless its a clear case of spam.

Anyway, it wouldn't be right to not post a picture, so I will. My favorite work was the removal of an object belonging to my sister. Namely her foot. I won't post the entire picture, but this is the pertinent part (note right side is altered image):

Just a quick little shop
Its nice to have a place to post photoshops.

Anyways, this is just a squid whose top is x-rayed, the x-ray image is actually a human body. The surrounded black is water, meaning this is really deep down.

Tutorials are always welcome. Any handy references or guides you'd like post, feel free, there's no such thing as useless information.

For example, I've had several questions come my way asking how to create an animated gif with photoshop. It's very simple really, all it takes is practice and patience. Anyone who'd like to learn how should follow this very simple tutorial:
How to animate in Photoshop (CS3)
After that, it's simple a matter of tweeking the resolution settings before you save to compress the file size to the desired limit.

I believe Heinrich also uses Fireworks. Perhaps you and he can collab with any questions that may arise in the future.

I'm fairly sure Kart-Man uses PS 6 or 7, and as for me I work primarily with Ps CS3. Any one with questions relating to any of those programs, well will do our best to help out.

I would also like to note that requests are also welcome here. If you do not have an editing program or do but aren't that adept with it and would like a pic altered, feel free to post or pm a regular with an external link to the photo. Make sure it's something shoppable and of decent quality, explain what you'd like done (in accordance with the rules, of course,) and someone will be happy to lend you a hand.

Thanks for the offer. If any problems arise we will be sure to take you up on it. Otherwise we will, as you said, try to deal with problems maturely should any arise.

In the meantime, I've always wanted to do this:

I'll post photoshop tutorials here every now and then, so here's a tutorial on my favorite thing to do in photoshop to photos. It can be used to make photos look old and faded or dark and a little creepy. I picked this tut earlier in the year on some blog and can't find it, so i'll just rewrite it the way I do it. Hopefully all my links work!

We'll start with this photo from jotamyg on DeviantArt
http://jotamyg.deviantart.com/art/The-Oc ean-31096102

1) First step is to get rid of some of the detail in the lighter areas, so the dark areas appear darker in the final product. So add a Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow to the whole photo. Here's the result, though feel free to tinker around and make it brighter or whatnot.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/3625/pi cture1zn4.jpg

2) Now we're going to add a cloudy effect to the photo. So duplicate the layer you have now (right-click > duplicate), and make sure your 2 colors in the toolbar are black over white by pressing the "D" key. Now go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Now you should have a thick layer of clouds over your photo. On that cloud layer, change the blending mode to "Screen." Here's a photo of where you can do that and what it will look like.
http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/9231/pi cture2ax1.jpg

3) The picture is looking pretty bright, and I only want that cloud effect to work in the lightest areas of the photo. To do that, duplicate the bottom layer of the photo and drag it on top of the cloud layer. Set the blending mode of that top photo to "Multiply." We now have 3 layers: top layer is the original diffused photo set to multiply, the middle layer is a screened cloud layer, and the bottom layer is the original diffused photo. Here's what the photo and my layers looks like.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7489/
picture3gw1.jpg

4) Merge all the layers into one. Easiest way to do this is to just flatten the image, so go to Layer > Flatten Image in the top menu bar. If you did it right, nothing in the photo changed and you now have 1 layer instead of 3.

5) Now we're going to remove the color in the image by desaturating it. Either go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate in the menu bar, or hit Shift-Ctrl-U / Shift-Command-U to make the photo black and white.

6) Now we're going to insert some more advanced features, to make the brights brighter and the darks darker. In the layers window, click the button that looks like a black and white frosting cookie and select "Curves." It will bring up a window of a line, so slightly bend it in 2 places by clicking on the line and dragging the points to make the whites bright and the blacks dark. Here's a photo of what I mean, with the black and white cookie circled in blue.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6627/pi cture4ok1.jpg

7) OPTIONAL COLOR: So now you have 2 layers, the first one being the original picture and the top layer a curves layer. Click on the black and white cookie icon again, and this time select "Photo Filter." This is up to you what color you want, either pick from the filter category or pick your own color. I chose a dark blue since I don't want a very colorful photo, but if you want something red or orange be my guest. Make sure "Preserve Luminosity" is checked. "The Density" is also your choice. Here's what it looks like.
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/1482/
picture5eo1.jpg

8) Repeat step 4, merge / flatten your 3 layers (Photo Filter on top, Curves in the middle, photo on bottom) into 1 layer.

9) Duplicate the 1 layer you have. Select the top layer and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Don't blur it too much, just enough to make the details still visible. For the image i'm using from the DeviantArt, I used 1.7 pixels.

10)Now you have 2 layers, a blurred layer and the non blurred layer. Select the top blurred layer and set its blending properties to "Soft Light." now you have a really soft looking image. The brighters got even brighter and the darks got darker if you did it correctly. Here's a photo with what the blur looks like on top, and what the Soft Light looks like on bottom.
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/3607/
picture6dr8.jpg

11) Merge both layers together again by flattening the image.

12) Here's a small tweak. Go to Image > Adjustments > Shadow / Highlight. I thought my image was a little too bland in some areas, so I pulled back in some detail. I set both of the scroll bars for Shadow and Highlight to 30%. It's up to you whether or not you want to do this.

13) Now for the most fun part. Duplicate your layer and select Filter > Render > Fibers. If your toolbar colors are white and black, your fibers will be white and black just like the clouds were previously. I just used the default settings, click the Randomize button to see different looking fibers.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/8197/
picture7we0.jpg

14) Click OK and now you should have a thick layer of fibers covering the photo. Set the blending mode of the fibers layer to "Soft Light," and mess around with the Opacity setting to get an image you like.

Congrats, you finished the tutorial! Try this on photos of landscapes, people, etc. Play around with the settings or add your own filters in-between to get your own style going.

Here we are at the first Photoshop Competition. This week's theme is Revolution.

You have to photoshop theme of revolution like a revolutionary portrait, historic picture, propaganda and the like. You have until August 30 to create your photoshop.

The Deviant Art account will be made once the contest is over and we have our top three.

Don't try to be too competitive, it's just a friendly game for the sake of having fun, entertaining visitors and practicing our skills.

I'll start you off with my creation:

You can submit one entry per person for the competition so take your time making it.

However, if you want to make more entries, you can do it just for the fun of it. If you make more than one entry, PM me the one you want to submit for the competition.

Hi.

All I gotta say is, thanks THEJamoke for making this thread. I want to go into the area of graphic designing when I get older, and I don't know one bit heck of a thing about photoshop.

I can be one of those like, "watching members" where I'll just read everyone's experiences here with photoshop and all those other softwares.

I'm looking forward to learning with the best :)

Thanks for the tip though.

try brushing some solid black on the edges instead of blotches. and maybe highten the contrast. i usually just improvise, i dont have a foolproof technique for most things.

Howdy,
For years(until about a month ago) I was using Paint Shop Pro 7, the free version (I dunno how free they meant it to be, but I didn't have to pay :D), then I got some msgs about my sloppy shops and someone gave me a copy of Photoshop CS2. Which isn't to be confused with version 3, which I think everybody else is running.

I've tried to watch some of these tutorials but my program is kinda obsolete for them. I could easily search youtube for Photoshop CS2 tuts, but I figured since there's this trove of information, maybe someone out there will wonder as well: Does anyone here know of any CS2 tutorials that are worthwhile?

This was my Extract(Crop) Tutorial. Not the one I made, but it's helped me :)

Has anyone else been helped by CS2 tutorials somewhere?

I made this someone on NG when they were sad, by the time I got back with the shop the thread was closed. I was sad because this one actually turned out alright. The background is one I found called "Road to Heaven", so I put the South Park God in there, and her. However, she never saw this picture and I've always liked the quality. Not that I put in a whole lot of work, but it came out ok :)

Hey everyone, thanks for inviting me!
I use photoshop 7 and I'm not using it for very long yet. The way I photoshop in my opinion is pretty basic, but it looks decent.
I love photoshop threads, and I'd love to learn more about photoshop. These competitions sound like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to them.

Also here's one of my latest photoshops.
Made with this and this image. Plus a screenshot I made from the Team Fortress 2 "Meet the Demoman" video.

Finding these images was quite a hassle. I'm usually very picky when it comes to my choice of images.
