Hi.

The idea behind this collab is to piece together a ton of 3s music videos. As long as they're all at 160BPM, they'll flow together, yet it'll all retain a crazy frantic pace.

Who can join?
Anyone. Since each part is only 3s, it'll almost definitely be good enough to go in, as long as you put in a modicum of effort. And if getting your 3s snippet of music is tricky for you, I can help you out there.

Why should I join?
Maybe you don't want to spend a massive amount of time animating and would rather just to a 3s snippet of something? Maybe you want to try a new technique, want to make sure it's seen in the portal, but don't want to dedicate a whole feature to it? Or maybe you just want to be involved with cool experimental things?

Getting the music
Okay. First choose a song that has a short snippet you like the sound of. Now, find out the current BPM.
(One way is to use my BPM counter - just start the music, open the page, then start clicking to the beats. Make sure you do it for 10s or so to get a representative number and maybe do it thrice, to check. You'll probably find that you get slightly different numbers due to human error. Use your judgement and work out what it's likely to be.

Now, open the file in a sound editor. I suggest Audacity - it's free and cross-platform. In Audacity, select everything (ctrl+A), then go to effect>change tempo. In 2nd row of boxes, put the current BPM in the left-hand side, then put '160' on the right hand side. This should ensure that the rhythm remains fairly constant throughout the movie. Note - if the original tempo was under 90ish or over 260ish, it may be an idea to halve or double that number. Assuming the song has 4 beats per bar (which I'm asking you to stick to), halving/doubling the BPM is almost a matter of personal taste and shouldn't affect how it flows too much.

Now, use the mouse to select portions and hit delete to remove everything other than 8 beats, which will give you a 3s portion.

Animating
Now animate whatever you want, using that 3s section as a soundtrack. Experiment with lip-synching or a new technique, just animate a grid of pixels or do some free-association. Subject matter is entirely up to you.

Animate at 30FPS.
The size is 600x370, but don't feel like you need to fill the frame or even do a background necessarily.
If you use Flash 10, export it as a CS3-compatible file. Flash 5,MX,MX2004,8 or CS3 are allowed.

Please name your symbols using this conventions: [username][whatever]
(so my symbols might be 'Bezman_cat', 'Bezman_lips', 'Bezman_movingWings' etc.)

Animate everything within one movie clip.

How I'll mix these
I'm not entirely sure. I'll put them all together, trying to get the music and graphics to flow. If your efforts look awesome and work as a loop, I may use them to help the movie flow from one piece to another. For example, if your effort was just a man walking to the beat, I may have him staying on a bit longer than 3s. If you draw something that works as a background, I'll leave it on for longer. I might have 2 music clips running alongside each other or one repeating if it works. I reserve the right to mix it all how I see fit.

Remember
- if you have any questions or issues, ask and I can either help or answer you.
- It should be awesome.

It's very unlikely that there'll be enough stuff exactly at 160BPM. As I mentioned, you can download Audacity and slow down or speed up the song from whatever BPM it originally was.

So it's basically a matter of choosing your 8-beat section, turning it into 160BPM and cutting it, then animating to it.

We choose 8 beats of a tune we like, change the speed to 160BPM (so they all blend), cut out those 8 beats (which should be 3s), animate to that snippet of music, then in the end I mash them all together.

It'll be like the Warioware of music videos.

Is there something specific that you don't understand?

Haha! As long as you change the speed and cut it precisely, it's all good. Looking forward to seeing/hearing it!

This will indeed have dissonant chords, considering differing keys, but it shouldn't be a cacaphony. It'll be an eclectic mix of everyone's favourite 3s of music, blended together...

Here:

This bee, though it has no bg, would be a fine submission. This is also completely fine.

And because the latter submission is mainly centred around the bg, the two could even be mixed for a few seconds,
like so.

Of course, the fact that Meryn Cadell's vocals didn't have backing instruments helped a lot. But when I'm mixing the final submissions together, I may well repeat the snippet of music, fading it in for 0.4s before it hits, etc.

Yeah, it's an experimental Mishmash. Are you in, or are you chicken?

I just realised I forgot to put in my contact details. Files can be sent to:

In response to a PM I got - yes, you can submit multiple efforts. Just make sure they all look good and you aren't spreading yourself too thin.

Feel free to do 4 or 5 if you have lots of time and ideas, but it may be an idea to post each one in the thread so I can check they're good enough.

As long as the snippet is 160BPM, exactly 8 beats (90 frames/3s) and the animation is half-decent, it'll be accepted.

Yes, you can definitely use your own song.

Don't worry.
I have songs that are exactly 160 bpm, and frankly, I don't suck, nor does my music suck.

I'll give this a shot. :)

HEy if anyone would want to animate the drums or secondary synth to my song, I'll post the download links to the mp3's in this topic. :) I just want to do the synth part and I thought the clash of styles would also be cool. You would do the background also. They are 160bpm and pretty much read to go!

(Sorry, you'll need to cut them to 3 seconds.)

You Find a song that is 160 beats per minute, or bpm, and cut 8 beats, or 3 seconds out ad animate it.
I have 2 instrument tracks that are 160 bpm that you can download and be ready to work with.

Use mine.

If you want to do a different song, use a bpm counter.

Read the 1st post in the topic more carefully - there's a BPM counter here. Click to the beats and it'll tell you the BPM.

If the BPM is not exactly 160BPM (even if it's 158 or 162), use Audacity or another program to change the BPM and speed up/slow down the song.

As long as it's definitely 160BPM - if the rhythm of speech is a bit too inconsistent, it might not work.

From what you say though, it should be fine.

A spoken part would also add variation, which is the primary aim, and maybe allow for some layering, depending on what you animate to it.

Wow! That's slick!

Like the bg squares that mirror the foreground particles, great colouring, funky twirling motion and the overall visual effect is lovely.

It does lag on my machine though. Really badly, from maybe 2s in.

Unless that's what you were meaning, I don't see how it's "messed up" - it's great otherwise.

Could you sort out the lag though?
And also tell me the name of the track for crediting purposes.

Yeah the lag you say is was i meant, the code is messed up, but i spose you won't be looking at that.
The song is Acid 8000 by Fatboy Slim, and i'm Olii :D

I'll post lagless version in a mo.
