Bayou Billy is Crocadile Dundee and the two guys on the cover of the Contra NES box are Arnold from Commando and Stallone from Rambo.

I'm not sure which way round but, the game was based on the film kurt russel was in... (either that or the film was based on the game)

The game wasn't actually based on the "Escape to" movies, but Snake was based on Snake Plissken of the movies. The movies definitely weren't based on the games :)

Snake Plissken was the main inspiration for the character Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid video game series. In Metal Gear Solid 2, Solid Snake goes undercover under the name of Iroquois Pliskin as a tribute to the protagonist of Escape from New York.

In Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Snake looks like Rambo, Dr.Kio Marv looks like Einstein and a few other characters are modeled after celebrities as well.
