The game wasn't actually based on the "Escape to" movies, but Snake was based on Snake Plissken of the movies. The movies definitely weren't based on the games :)

In Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Snake looks like Rambo, Dr.Kio Marv looks like Einstein and a few other characters are modeled after celebrities as well.
