They were going about it all wrong. The secret is to stop attacking it altogether and it will concede defeat in admiration of your peaceful nature. It's a bold and artistic expression of the need for non-violence in a world that glorifies carnage.

The special bosses take ages and are worth it as you know you are amazing afterwards.
FF7 - Ruby weapon, still have yet to kill it myself.
FF8 - Omega Weapon, took about 45 minutes.
FF9 - Osmos, havent killed yet.
FF10 - quite a lot on there, one arean boss took me 2 hours to kill, Omega took about half an hour.
All the good RPGs have these stupidly long fights. You have to be amazing to beat them and they are fun.

Phh I say good going, if they make it that hard then it will take someone amazing and with great endurance to beat it. Then that player or group of players are truly good players.
Those people were cowardly quiting after 18 hours, I never quit no matter how long it takes or untill I die.

I have nothing against long bosses, I've spent plenty of time in rediculous long RPG boss battles, but I think there is a limit. It's one thing for one person to fight a boss for an hour or two, but when 20+ people are closing in on an entire day of non-stop gameplay and there's still no end in sight you've taken that fun challenge, raped it with a spikey dildo, beat its dying body with its own entrails that have been extruded from the gaping hole that was once its ass, and replaced it with a heinous undying beast that know only pure hatred for anyone who plays video games.

Yea I guess, The longest I had was trying to steal items from a boss on FF9 and also some boss on FF10, both were not so much of skill but more of constant repetitive gameplay for hours. Its tiring especially to the eyes and the mind. I still got the thrill after beating them, but if you have to quit out it would just feel bad.
I cant believe they actually made a boss that long though, if that was on purpose they have some good meaty balls.

Sounds like something was wrong with either the game itself, or the way the game was being played.

18 hours is pretty damn epic... But I think they weren't doing it right because they wouldn't make a boss 18+ damn hours!
but who knows? Grid has a 24 hour Le Manes race, which is literally, 24 hours to win that race and you can also do that race online. (Xbox 360)

You know what I did when I read this?
I put on a puzzled expression and simply weezeed for five minutes.
I have watched your hour and a half long cutscene, Hideo Kojima.
I have spent thirteen hours straight completing your story mode without fucking about or anything, Rockstar Games.
This, not only will I not do it, but I believe it to be a violation of human rights.

Like some people have said, I think something is probably wrong. Keep in mind the guild fought the boss for 18 hours and still didn't beat it, so for all we know it takes more than 24 hours to kill. I have a hard time believing Square would purposefully put in a boss that takes that long to defeat, because people have neglected their children and let them die while playing MMO games, and didn't one Korean kid actually die from playing SC for like two days straight? The point is, Square would be shooting themselves in the foot with a boss of that length, because if anything bad happened to someone, a child's death or the person dying himself because he never got up to take a shit and his inside's exploded, they might find some lawsuits knocking at their door. Then it would be all over the news headlines, "Video game forces group of players to fight a battle for 24 hours, one boy dies." I wouldn't think Square would want to have to deal with any repercussions that could come out of a stunt like this.
With that said, there are lengthy boss battles in FFXI. I used to play it, but never got far enough to experience them. I heard tons of stories, however. People said there are end game bosses that take anywhere from 3 - 5 hours to beat, and that a lot of players would piss in bottles while the fight was going on so they didn't have to leave the PC and risk dying or wiping the party.
But, FFXI sucks ass anyways. If you're going to pay for an MMO you may as well take the WoW plunge. FFXI always felt like work. WoW was fun for the first 6 months, then it felt like work.
I've been refurbished and reissued, prepackaged and precooked, decontaminated and deloused, but I still smell, sound, look and feel like shit.

it's an mmo, all they had to do what level up.
They were probably a really shitty level.
For those who haven't played FFXI Online you can have parties of up to 18 players.
Which means 18 vs 1 monster can become extrememly easy (Because you WILL ALWAYS have a mage healing you all the time)
the monster they fought was probably extrememly slow and only attacked one person at a time but unfortunatly had the health of a fucking mountain.
All they had to do was level up and increase there attack power then come back to fight the monster again.
You could also blame it on the lack of attacking forces. Which could explain why they were able to survie for 18 hours on one monster. Mostly white mages in the party will keep you alive but wont necessarily end the battle quickly.

i think that the boss battles shouldn't take more than 1 hr
( i mean like 'the end' from MGS3 that was a long boss battle on normal. people spent from 1-4 hrs on that 1 boss)
