Well if they were NATO members I doubt this whole thing would've happened in the first place. And with that now I'm even more sure that Russia will be going after Ukraine next. Or at least create tensions between the Russian east and the Pro Western west of the country. You know they're gonna take over Belarus as well since they're already Russia's bitch anyhow.

Some news sources are claiming that this is just another front in ww3.
In other news, Muslim rebels in the Philippines are renewing war in Mindanao.. yet another separate war? or just another front in the GWOT? Georgia, Somalia, Philippines, East Timor, Xinnang, Pakistan, Afganistan, Iraq..... separate conflicts or connected?

I doubt it. But I wouldn't take a new Cold War off the table though.

At the moment I think it is just an overheated argument with Russia and Georgia. Although, the way Russia have reacted with their military force it does seem a bit over the top. I doubt it is empire building, but you never know about hidden intentions.

UN does have a security force, however using miliary force requires the Security Council's approval, and seeing as Russia is part of that council, it ain't happening. If this turns into a military matter, NATO is the force that is going to get involved.
What I'm wondering is, what does China have to say about this, they must be pissed that this conflict is stealing the light from the Olympic games, and lets not forget, they are much more powerful than Russia military wise.

In his new conference yesterday, the Washington Post writes, "Bush forecast doomsday if Tehran builds nuclear weapons. 'We got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel,' he said. 'So I've told people that if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from [having] the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.'" The New York Daily News on Bush's WWIII comment: "White House sources confirmed it was the first time Bush has floated that apocalyptic scenario for the Islamic republic. His language seemed even starker as he admitted relations with Russia have grown frostier. Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian leaders in Tehran Wednesday. The tougher talk seems to move Bush rhetorically closer to Vice President Cheney in an intensifying internal White House debate over the gravity of the threat posed by Iran. Does anyone think this makes Iraq potentially more chaotic? The New York Times: "Turkey's Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to authorize sending troops into northern Iraq to confront Kurdish rebels in hide-outs there, sending an angry message to the Baghdad government and its Washington sponsor. But Turkey, a member of NATO, made it clear that it would not immediately carry out the resolution."

Possible understatement of the year... invading their capital city is a bit much, especially when Georgia (to my understanding) was only acting to defend it's own people by quelling the separatist groups that were funded by the Russians.
Although, the way Russia have reacted with their military force it does seem a bit over the top.
That's basically what the UN said, but nothing has been done about it.
I doubt it is empire building, but you never know about hidden intentions.
Oil pipeline, anybody?
I believe that the other main pipeline that transports oil to western Europe runs through Russia. The one that runs through Georgia was built specifically in case the Russians decided to halt oil supplies for whatever reason.

I think I see what Russia is doing, they know no one wants to get involved in fear a ww3, so they take advantage of that fear and keep on going, however if countries start to get involved it would be a slap in the face to Russia and they might back down.

And I forgot about the pipeline, I got sidetracked by everyone going on about Russia trying to takeover former Eastern Bloc countries.

I know but would the Russians really keep on going knowing full well that they (along with everyone else in the world) would be destroyed.

Both could be on the line if Russia is up to something or threatened.

Russia has pipeline that runs through Georgia, probably they were bitching over that and this happend. I see no other reason. Also if Russia start WW3 we're fucked. With today's advanced technology and ruthlessness, uncaring for one that is armed or not innocents shall fall and armed will fall only slower in Georgia. Also if other intervene Russia is also one of the biggest suppliers to the world so they can threaten to cut it off to any country that they supply.
Too true:

It's reported that the Georgian army has fallen back to try to defend the capital, Tbilisi.
Italy's foreign minister stated that Italy will send troops to South Ossetia if the EU decides to intervene on Monday.

You think they will be able to repel any attempts by the Russians to take the city?

Sounds like someone used the fact that the Eu will do nothing to make themselves look good.

I for one think this war is terrible, but I don't want our country (The US) to get involved. We don't need another war going on. I hope BuddhaGeo is ok and not dead.

UPDATE
I had not internet connection last night due to some technical difficulties, but whatever it is
I am alive.
On a relative note, the Russian President has just declared a withdrawal from all military operations on the Georgian soil. Hopefully it is true but just 30 minutes I heard a very loud blast outside and I am unsure what really is happening.
I haven't wasted my time yesterday, and being stripped off access to NG, I came up with this caricature.

Front page of the Telegraph (english newspaper) said that Russia was withdrawing troops but stepping up the bombing =/
