So I just saw that some American cyclists arrived in Beijing wearing masks because of the suspected air quality. I for one think this is justified, they are athletes and have every right to be concerned about their health and performance. I feel they also made a nice move apologizing for any offense they might have caused. What's your opinion on this?

Don't lots of people in Beijing already wear masks all the time anyway?

I think that has really been uncommon since SARS became less of a issue.

I think you only get to wear a mask when you have some sort of sickness, like a cold and whatnot.
I think they do that in Japan too, because the population is so damn dense.

While wearing the mask seems justified it seems a bit offensive to the Chinese government, but it's justified(the masks).

It probably started out as a statement against china. They got called on it and pussed out.

They could just ask the Beijingers wearing the masks if its about air quality or whatnot.

They should just not be offended, it's not a big deal.
