Is there a way I can get my computer to automatically shut down in windows Vista? I want to listen to some music to help me sleep, but don't want to leave my comp on all night.

I lol'd.

There is a way in Command prompt to set your computer's shutdown to at timer, but I don't remember how, and I think it terminated all applications anyway.

I think you can go into task scheduler and create a task to shutdown your computer at a certain time.

Go to start > run > cmd.

Typ shutdown -s -t 500

Where 500 is then number of seconds for it to shutdown. If you wanna cancel it go to the command prompt again and typ shutdown -a

There are other ways besides the mentioned methods. I've had my computer go onto standby automaticly.

Also, I can't seem to spell "Automaticly," it jusyt doesn't look right.

I can't be of much more help, I'm still using Win XP

Install something and tick a box that shuts it down after or something. I don't know really.

And could you replace -s with -m, trading seconds for minutes?

No, the -s stands for I'm going to guess shutdown. The -t is for the time it will take till shutdown, which is always in seconds.

and using basic math we can figure that 500 seconds is near enough 8 minutes.

My laptop has an application that will shut it down after so many minutes of inactivity, I believe it's called Dell Quickset. I don't know if it is available for download anywhere, but I always play music at night and have the screen go black, then turn off after 2 hours.

but i thought the shutdown -s -t 9001 -c "haha, its over nine-thousand" command only works on XP...

and yes, you can add a comment on your shutdown, like what i did durr /\

u just have to add -c after the seconds (put a space mmkay?) and add some comment

check it:

To change the recovery settings and disable automatic rebooting:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. You still have to sort out what's causing the problem, but at least you'll have a starting point

Oh wait I misunderstood your question my bad...
