This is more of a challenge than a contest but the idea is to make DnB that isn't in 4/4 so that it has much more possibilities for different rhythms

Rules:
- you can submit as many tracks as you want, but you have to pick 1 to be your entry
- the track cannot be in 4/4 or any other square time signature
- the track must be dnb or a dnb subgenre

Deadline is the 16th of August

Let me know if you want to judge or take part, and ill throw up a list

Good Luck

you know that effectively kills off 95%+ of musicians on NG right, and thats why noone has joined the contest ;)

you should eliminate any simple time signature as well, that'd be fun

I'm in.

my music thoery is a little rusty, but I'm thinking you mean time signatures like, 3/4, 12/8, and really strange stuff like that, cause if thats the case, I'd like to give it a go!

I actually made a Dnb "influenced" song awhile back in 5/4. It came out pretty nice I might say.

Maybe I'll try that again.

Hell, i almost NEVER write in 4/4. I think you should also dissallow 3/4, 6/8 etc.

I made a song in 23/4 once, it wasn't DnB though.

No, that stuff is common. He means more like 13/8, 11/16, 7/4, 23/16, and other crazy ass shit. Listen to Meshuggah, Dream Theater, and Tool for examples on awkward time signatures.

I'm not going to enter the contest, just being informative to the people by what awkward is. And yeah, 23/4 seems really strange. That's almost 6 normal measures worth of music in one measure of 23/4.

Though I might inform my brother.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll try cooking something up if there's some time to spare.

For the ones that are joining for sure - check out a track called "Try the silence" by "Format X" for inspiration, it makes good use of a 7/4 rythm in "conventional" drum&bass.

Haha, sounds fun. I'm messing about with a 6/8 tune at the moment and I've got some DnB elements in there, but I'd love to go all out weird ass just for the competition, count me in.

as long as its not a nice square time signature its allowed, 5/4 is still a challenge but for those who do want to really push themselves and do 7/3 or something then go for it

and so far we have:

hmm, correct me if i'm wrong here, but 7/3 is impossible :p That would mean splitting a bar into three, which i've never in my life seen done before. Sorry to be an ass about it.

I think some might be interested to know that you can go into more detail with your time signature, for instance, I've seen time signatures in the format- 5,3,2/8, which means that overall there are 10 beats in the bar, but they're grouped into 5, 3 and 2 beats, where the first beat of each group would be a strong beat in the bar.
Just thought you might like to know that.

7 bars, 3 beats to a bar works fine doesn't it ? unless im missing something here

aww, I'd love to participate, but I'm working on something else right now, and that might be put on hiatus for another project :(

Also, if T7 finds that time, then whats the point of having a contest like this? Seriously, we're all doomed :P

7/3 would be 7 triplets in each bar
but you can't write time signatures that way
you can only write in quarter notes, 8th notes, 16th notes etc etc

what you're describing would be 3/4 ( or 21/4 if you want to get redundant )

ahhhh right, oh well yeah 21/4 then, i've done very little music theory, i understand the different time signatures just not the notation

when i said 21/4 is redundant, i meant there's no reason to use it if what you meant was 7 bars that are all 3/4
the only reason to have time signatures with big numbers in is if you want go between different time signatures
like 15/8 could be one bar with 7/8 and one with 4/4 ( 8/8 )

oh and another thing
about Meshuggah, someone used them as an example for weird time signatures
meshuggah uses alot of polyrhythms, where essentially the drums are in 4/4, while the guitar and bass are in another time signature
just wanted to point that out

i'll stop posting here now, since i don't make dnb

Man, this is harder than I thought, I'm having a lot of trouble getting a flowing drum beat in 7/8.

Its just not very foot tapping.

octain vein you speak only sense, you should take part

and Rawmin its not easy to get a constant rhythm going but its easy to make some interesting breaks and changing the time signature really opens the door to lots of new rhythms

just trying to help not to advertise my music
thanx and good luck to all participants

That is awesome. I've begun working on my 5/4 track. I've got about a minutes worth of music at the moment, although it's nowhere near as awesome as ZENON's track, I think it's alright.
