What if it was true?
Well since we're speaking in hypotheticals, I think that we all know that Square-Enix would push the release on at least both the 360 and the PS3, and perhaps even, in this case, the Wii.
I can perceive many gamers saying "it's just a remake", as well as many others saying "OMG I WANNA CREEM MY PANTS AT TEH GAYEST VILLEN EVER, SEPHILOVEROTH" and I can imagine those who haven't played it before taking the opportunity.
It would sell well enough. It wouldn't push the noticeable purchase of new consoles, though. And I don't think it'd sell anywhere close to "popular" games like Gaylo 3, GTA4, SSBB, etc.
A lot of people don't even have that much faith in square-enix as a company anymore.
I can just barely remember the last time they produced a decent game.
It's a shame because, respectively, they had some of the best games on the SNES as Squaresoft and Enix.
That said, pertaining to the remake itself, there'd be some kind of add-on into the story, maybe an alternate ending even, but ultimately it's just be a port of the last game with new graphics. If they actually want it to sell, changing gameplay would only hurt them IMO.
Ultimately, not worth it. And that's probably why they're not pushing it.
You might argue that it is worth it, that plenty of people would buy it, it was a good game originally, etc.
But there are two things to consider. First, plenty of people didn't like FF7, as did plenty of people jizz in their pants over how "awesome" of a storyline and game it is. And secondly, once they start porting old versions of there games with new graphics, a lot of people might lose respect for the company. How long can one milk one game concept and storyline?
