how am I a fanboy? They're the same brand.

LOL MORON.

You're a moron, if you think that being a fanboy only applies to brands, and not specific products.

Fanboy is a term used to describe an individual who is devoted to a single point of view

God forbid I want an image in my sig that isn't a 2px thick horizontal line

I'm sorry, but this thread is going downhill.
Let's just get an objective view.

The 4870:
Memory Type GDDR5
Memory Size(MB) 512
Memory Interface 256bit
Core Clock Speed(MHz) 750
Memory Clock Speed(MHz) 1800

The 8800GT:
core clock 600Mhz
memory clock 1800MHz
memory type
512MB GDDR3 256bit

You decide for yourself.
People saying you should take a 9800 are wrong, since the 8800 overpowers the 9800. At least the ones I saw, maybe not the superclocked ones.

I've bought, returned, and sold more ATI cards than anything else I owned in my life.

Biggest most fucking annoying pile of grief to ever greet my doorstep in a brown package.

ATI is a fucking garbage corporation that is falling apart, just like its processors.

4780? Bought 3. 2 dead on arrival. Last one overheated a few minutes in. With a heatsink.

My 8600 GTS, 8800 GT, 8800 GTS, and 7900 GT? All working perfectly fine to this day, without any heatsinks.

Fuck you. Just screaming out a high number you see on TomsHardware doesn't make your opinion valid for shit.

Don't bother wasting your time with ATI.

Are you kidding me? My whole life i've used ATI, it works perfectly, you just have bad luck with mail, why not just go to the store and buy a card there? go to like frys or something. Also, the heat problem, your fans just suck.

You're one glitch in the system =P

Bah, that predjudice that AMD users have to buy ATI and INTEL NVIDIAs is completely nonesense.

I always buy Intel because they were more stable from the beginning. But that doesn't mean that AMD is bad. Nvidia is most of the time my choice, but ATI does his job well. For example the HD4870, it is way better than the GTX280... in the contrary, the pre-test of the HD4870X2 is not that convincing, so the GTX280b can maybe be a surprising winner.

I wait and check, if I plan to assemble my new machine, and decide on the current market situation, and make my bet on all horses. The challenge should win the best, the one that deserves it and gives you that performance and features you are willing to pay for, don't you agree?

The HD4870 is coming with 512 MB only, but there will be a 1 GB and 2 GB version from PowerColor soon.
The HD4870X2 is coming with two 1GB versions, ergo a total of 2GB.

The GTX280 has 1GB
The GTX280b - not specified yet.

I got a 8800GT and I'm satisfied with it, now, I haven't tested the ATI card anyway

Not a well decision. That HD4870 is two generation better than that 8800GT. Altough it has only about about 20-50% more performance (the higher the resolution, the more the gap), the technology is way better (PhysX, Havoc, DX10.1, etc.).

The only good is the halfed price of the 8800GT... but that would have been worth it, for sure, because the out-dated 8000-serie will be under-powered soon, if not already, regarding Crysis, Assassins Creed, for example.

Agree - but with the 8800GT he can bridge some time until the HD 4870 gets around 100 bucks cheaper. Then he can waste those 100 bucks he saved buying the cheaper one and has finally the performance he could have had fro mteh start for the same money overall ^.^
