Anybody have anything similarrr?
About two years ago I was giving a co-worker a lift home. He lived in the heart of the ghetto in the wrong side of MLK Jr. Boulevard.
As he was exiting the car, his dog came out to great him, followed by these two little black and white pups that looked like they were pregnant. I asked him if they were his, and he said no, they were abandoned by neighbors a few weeks ago. Their dog had a litter, they sold most of them, and these two were the runts nobody wanted so they put them out on the street.
Even though I had recently just lost a dog (the greatest pet I ever had) to Lyme disease and didn't want to have to go through losing another animal one day, my heart just broke right then and there and I took them in. I immediately drove to WalMart (it was the nearest place open at 11:30PM) and bought everything I would need for them; food, beds, toys, shampoo, the works.
I took them to the vet the following week, and it turned out the reason they had huge stomachs was gastric abdominal distention due to dehydration and malnourishment. The doc said they were only 6-8 weeks old and on the verge of death, another week and they'd have been dead. He started them on de-worming meds, gave them their immunizations and sent us home. I didn't sleep for over a week after that visit to stay up with them, make sure they were comfortable and not scared of their new surroundings, plus to make sure they pooped in the proper spot on the newspaper.
Here it is, two and a half years later, and they are healthy, spoiled little animals. They are like children to me and do not regret keeping them for one second. I just finished giving them a bath not 20 minutes ago.
Epilogue: My co-worker told me there was a 3rd puppy besides them who was being kept by the rat bastards who left them for dead. He was being chained to an old chicken coop outside in their driveway, no food or water in sight. I didn't want garbage like them to possibly abuse another animal, so I sneaked on to their property a few days after I had first found them, cut the chain and took him home. The next day I gave him to two friends who were getting married and moving to a new house with a big yard. I still see him from time to time, and they take excellent care of him.
