Can't really help with the microphone, but if you'll be using it with a laptop then make sure the laptops got some grunt to run it with. USB devices are mostly handled on the cpu, which can cause a few issues of their own when you're using high bandwidth devices.
If you're getting a dual core laptop, this is less likely to be a problem as (in theory) one core can handle the USB stuff while the others running your audio suite, but a lot of cheaper laptops are still shipping with celerons or semprons, so you'll want to keep an eye out.
Harddrives on laptops are slower than their desktop equilavents as well, so running regular defrags will be more important than ever.
