I don't play World of Warcraft for the following reasons:

1. You have to pay

2. It's not THAT fun, but I can see how it appeals to most people

3. Too many 1337 players that will own my a$$.

4. My family will think I'll become a WoW addict like my brother was, and will quickly tell me to stop playing and bug me all day etc.

Enough about me and more about your friend. What can you do? Obviously deleting his account won't help, he'll probably just make a new one and get pissed off at you. I'm not sure about this, he'll realize it later probably about the amount of time it's consuming from his life.

They ruined it by making it completly easy to get gear, they made old raids useless, classes need balancing.. etc.

and the post-60 gameplay wasn't brilliant either

no matter what anybody says WoW, runecape, or any other MMO "addiction" is not a actual addiction
its more like be addicted to cookies or a tv show, you want it so you play it, eat it, watch it whatever
and when you give it up you will be 1.mad 2. get a FALSE sense of going crazy 3. move on but allways have it in the back of you head, i was "addicted" to WoW once and so was my cousin, when we quit we BOTH went through those exact stages in that exact order, i and was a real "addict" (i lost LOTS of sleep and my grades went from A's to D's)
when you have a real addiction you CANT quit, if you try to quit cold turkey you WILL go crazy
there are cases of suicides, murders, break in's and grand theft auto just so people can get their next fix
if a WoW "addict" cant afford the monthly payments he quits end of story
