Yeah... I've decided to sell my soul to the NAVY. They pay for four years of my college in return for four years of service. I need the scholarship though. I'm planning on going for 8 years at $24,000 a year to become a Behavioral Psychologist . I can cover the remaining four years with the Academic Scholarship George Fox gave me. Maybe i'll just go for four and become a SEAL officer. When you have a degree, you can start at officer instead of Private. I'm not sure what I'll do. Anyone who's done with college, your advice will be welcomed.

I'm doing a similar thing, but with the Army. As I'm probably going to convert to law after the first year of my english degree, I can become an army lawyer for a few years, and have the government pay for any bar exams or training that I need. Pay is reasonable too -- after qualifying as a lawyer, I get my commission as a Captain, on a professionally qualified officer's salary (so more than an average Captain would be paid).

Good for you. Have fun. It's like they pay you to go to school. Good luck.

I would have done the army, but I live in Washington. I'm in love with the water. I broke records on the swim team, my nickname is "Fish". My Uncle Steve is also a Commander in the NAVY so I have some friends high on the Naval ladder. Also, I dream of being a Frogman.

I suggest that you do NOT sign up. Most NAVY guys I know regret the decision very much.
Make sure that's what you want before you sign the papers man because afterward your ass belongs to them.

The Navy never really appealed to me -- not because of the obvious gay stigma, that doesn't really bother me, I'm just not all that fond of water. I'd rather be on dry land if I can help it... but hey, everyone's different. A guy I know is currently training as a Naval officer, and he seems to really be enjoying himself, so I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Infantry is for suckers, you're basically just cannon fodder ;P
Of course I'm kidding, but personally my preference is to join one of the supporting corps, like legal or medical. You obviously have to have a degree in the appropriate field to join those corps, but you get paid more and you're much less likely to get shot on the front lines.

It's good that you picked the Navy instead of the Marines.
Anyways, what you plan on doing sounds alright but I don't recommend doing anything with SEALs if you're not very athletic. They go through hell in training.

So long as you get a good price for your soul ;)
Thing is though, they pay for four years, but do they then expect you to serve your four years immediately after, or can you complete the eight years of school first then serve?
(if that makes sense)

I know they do. Very athletic, like I mentioned earlier. I already do the "12-a-day" run with my dad who's in the Marines.

Yeah, they only enlist you once you're done with all of your school. The second you stop going to school, (summers excluded) you'd better have your bags packed 'cause your ass belongs to them. I hope the Iraq war is over in 8 years...

If I were going to college, I would never EVER go into any military service, unless it was my last option.

But It's not illegal to sell your life. I'm too lazy to tell you about it but someone did.

I'm joining the Marines. My plan is to become a Avionics Specialist (already guaranteed the job) and after two years, if I stay out of trouble and show interest in becoming an officer i.e. taking night classes, furthering my education, I'll apply for a program call MEASEP. Basically I go to a university while still listed as active duty. The only catch is I have to be enrolled in the schools ROTC program. My goal right now is to attend Texas A&M and major in aerospace engineering. After I graduate form college I'll become a officer and apply for flight school. Hopefully I'm competent enough to fly and after 20 years in the military, I'll retire, collect my pension check and fly for a commercial airline.

During times of war, such as now, the Coast Guard falls under the juresticion on the Department of Navy. So, really either way you can get sent anywhere in the world.

Meh, why not consider being a lawyer for the navy? Its non combat work, and eventually you can leave.

I WANT combat work. I'm actually leaning toward doing the dangerous stuff. SEAL, maybe. But more likely, I'll go with deep sea diving and demolitions or something like that. I can't stand the thought of being in the military and standing in a nice, safe, clean room while other men just as good as me are out fighting so that people can bitch about whoever they elected to lead them.

NAVY isn't just submarines. There's Fighter Jets, Destroyers, Carriers, ect... NAVY just means your on the water most of the time.

I saw what happened to many of my Dad's tenants. (He's a landlord) And I decided that I didn't want to end up renting a house and barely making all the payments every month so I decided to not drop out of school though I had been seriously thinking about it. It feels so awesome to have my future secure and well planned. I'd like to encourage anyone thinking about dropping out not to do it. It's a lot of work, but it's WAY worth it.
My mom didn't see it that way... My dad calmed down when I showed him the pay.
About six grand a month, full health care, free housing (within reason), and grocery allowance. (Meaning they pay a chunk of your food bill)
