A lot of the voice actors for the monsters are edited versions of Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Morgan Freeman, and Mr. T

Sauron, the wraiths and the spider are technically black.

Actually, when you think about it, LotR was a bit on the racist side. I mean, all the heroes were perfectly white, Aryan beings who represented the best of the white race. But the Dark Lord Sauron? Dark, as in black. All his creatures were dark-skinned. The Men most ready to his command were the dark-skinned Men of the East (from the Middle East or India). So yeah, there was a shot of racial stuff in LotR. Not that there's anything wrong with that: remember that Tolkien wrote in a time before blacks were considered equal to whites anywhere on Earth, and that he was himself a white man.

That's not true, and I think it's insulting to say that. Tolkien grew up in a white society; he didn't have the ideas of multi-culturalism. Lord of the Rings is set in a world without planes and freight boats, there is no Ellis Island, no immigration. The people of the north-west are white, and they don't mix with the people to the south and east. The orcs are only black because it augments the impression that they are like monsters, not black people.

I prefer just reading the book and visualizing all the characters as tan and androgenous.

Well you COULD admit that it was written during a time when racism wasn't wrong and that the books were influenced by cultures from times that black people didn't even exist.

Is it not implicitly racist -- even if the association was created on a subconscious degree -- that black is the color that represents monsters?

Tolkien said himself that he was not racist, and that he hated the notion of racism altogether.
Besides, when he said the orcs were black, he probobly ment like tar or soot, not african skin.

No, jesus! The point was that they're twisted CREATURES, not people. They have been tortured and burnt in fires and pits and things to be created and so are ashen.
Also, that's another thing. Tolkien himself was most definitely not racist. There's a quote which I can't remember where he condems apartheid. At the end of a day, it's his novel and people need to leave it alone.

Yeah, because if a person of a different race isn't included in a fictional movie, it's racist. In fact, this topic is racist because it mentions black people.
eh.

Personally, I don't even know why people pl3h lotro. After checking out some vids and watching a m8 pl3h it, I can say it totally sucks ass compared to age of conan, warhammer etc.

Exactly. Tolkien probably didn't mean to put racism in there, but racial tones ended up in there by accident. In his time it wouldn't have even looked that way, it didn't look that way to me until I was corrupted by the Internet, but a person can look at LotR and see it if their mind is tuned in that direction.

No, The Dungeons and Dragons Movie Made in 2000 was racist: They Killed Off the Black guys.
What a shame, Mister Jensen.
I never asked for this, Mister Denton.
