Gil Grissom is gone from CSI But he will remain throughout the run of the series as an executive producer. And he will, whenever CBS asks, come back to the show

Hmm, I don't watch too many T.V. shows (Apart from Chuck), so I'm not really familiar with CSI. However, I'd say that losing it's main character would be quite a problem for the show.
