Are you sure your speakers are plugged in and turned on and that the volume is up in the Volume Control box?

A shot sound card? Even if this is the case, you'll still be able to have on-board sound through the motherboard. If you have a sound card, unplug ths speakers from it, and plug them into the jacks on the motherboard, see how that goes.

This has happened to me before, if you loaded up "fail safe defaults" in the pre-startup screen, you need to go back and undo that.
Other wise, you need to check your devices active/inactive devices and turn the audio on. Which happens about half the time as well. I can't remember how to get there though.
