Have you thought that perhaps the directors are trying to tell a well known story in an original way. You can't have the same film made 10 times just so you don't have a seizure.

He probably realize that, and I do too...
...We just wish their version wouldn't suck, that's all.

Oh, please. That's just the movie industries milking a worn cow and leaving it out to rot. Teens are not to blame here, though the shrieky, swooning over DiCaprio type can rot in hell any day.

Tough luck, LOL. More the reason to buy Spiderman 3 DVD just so that you can make a little flame in the backyard to soothe the rage.

shakespear can be done in any time period.
when you don't try to stick said time period up his ass.

An english class in highschool took us on a feild trip to see Romeo and Juleit. That movie was dogshit. John Lequizamo was the highpoint in the film. Nothing against Johnny Legs but have you ever seen him in a good movie?
Some of the guys snuck out to watch Space Jam. I think they had a more cultural expereince.
Awhile back I saw the Macbeth movie Fli is talking about in the video store. Macbeth has a goatee and carries a submachine gun? I think not. If course it's possible I'm still married to the image of him from Disneys Gargoyals, which was also more culturaly relevant.
In short this story, like others I've seen, don't have to be updated. Like The Andromida Strain on A&E a couple months ago. The book was about fear of the unknown. The movie tacked on some overly politicized enviromental message. And it sucked. The story did not need updating because people are still afraid of the unknown. There are human truthes we aren't evolving away from no matter how many product placments we throw in their place.

Romeo + Juliet was so over the top that I just had to laugh. I didn't like it one bit. It tried way to hard.
