I decided to redownload garrysmod after I got my new 1TB hard drive today. (I deleted it last time due to space restrictions) I'll probably frequent the thread a bit more, and exchange mutual insults and whatnot. My only question is, what addons do I get? I plan on playing a fair bit of online, and i already have Wiremod, but is there anything else that is generally needed or is the rest just optional?

A lot of the servers i join just use wiremod and a bunch of extra skins. Just make sure you have the basic bunch of skins and stuff (TF2 Ragdolls, CS:S props and ragdolls and whatnot) Other wise you will just see people playing with big red flashing error messages. Or strange purple objects.

I could be wrong however, i don't go on garrys mod that much anymore.

I suggest you get Tortoise SVN if you don't have it, make sure you have Wire SVN (Not the same as wire, svn is the most recent version.) get PHX3 Svn using tortoise svn and definitely some TF2 (if you don't have it) CS:S (If you don't have it) and Half Life 2 (If you don't have it) materials, models and props pack, just so you aren't seeing errors or purple checkerboards.

If you want to go on to any Space Build servers your definitely going to want the maps for it, usually the map tag is SB_*mapnamehere* but I have seen some DM_'s and GM_'s. You will also need the following:

-SBMP SVN (Space Build Model Pack SVN)
-SBEP SVN (Space Build Enhancement Project SVN) This gives you more models.
-LS2 SVN (Life Support 2 SVN AND All it's components.)
-SG SVN (Stargate Svn and ALL of it's components [just to get the full experience out of it]) Nocturnal Gaming Servers Space build uses Stargate and it's the best Space Build server I have been on.

And that's all I can think of for Space Build... Oh, usually the most used maps for Space Build Servers is either GM_New_Worlds or SB_Gooniverse. I highly recommend Space Build servers it is a really cool experience when you get really good at it, it simulates actual space travel and the dangers of space. It can be really fun when you don't have those total dicks playing.

The only other thing I can suggest to you for any build server including space build is Advance Duplicator, it allows you to copy your creations if they are restrained to each other somehow and save them to the server, then the game then you can join any other time and just open it up, spawn it, and continue working on it or have fun with it...
